Respect and protection take precedence over entertainment, and I wish we could do more of that in America.

If hiking isn’t your thing, wait until you see the emerald green waters of Lake Louise for the first time! A fine ground stone powder provided by the Lefroy Glacier is deposited in the lake, giving it this beautiful color.
Although you can’t tell from the pictures, the day we visited the lakeside was very crowded. The crowd and many dogs admired the view, ate lunch at the restaurant, walked along the lake, rented kayaks and paddled out to see the glacier up close. Since Ty and Buster were uncomfortable with crowds and other dogs, we decided to go up the mountain, where there might be less people.
It’s hard to resist a good cup of tea on top of a mountain, and when we saw the signs for the Lake Agnes Tea House, the decision was made.
The distance listed was 3.4 km, which equates to 2.1 miles, and seemed quite suitable for an afternoon walk. Let me tell you…I’ve done this calculation in my head dozens of times and I believe my rusty math skills have betrayed me! It was a long, steep climb and we were running late so it was easily not an option if we wanted to get back to the car before dark.

We almost gave up when a group coming down the hill told us we were halfway there… but I’m really glad we didn’t. It would have been worth a look but our upstairs sandwich and tea cake was the icing on the cake.
At 7,0005 feet above sea level, the Lake Agnes Tea House was originally built in 1901 as a shelter for passengers on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Tea has been served since 1905, and although the wooden house was replaced in 1981, the original windows, tables and chairs still remain. At the top, I learned that we had gained 1,300 feet of elevation in this 2.1 mile stretch, which explained why my legs felt like rubber.
Driving to a mountain tea shop is a bit of a challenge. Because everything is made from scratch, the chopper includes flour, sugar, propane and other dry goods at the start of each season. New items should be brought in by staff two to four times a week. They haul and collect garbage every day!
Of course, no adventure is complete without taking pictures of the boys…so I set up Buster and Tay while Rod got our snacks.

Even Buster’s expression changed when he caught Ty’s first prophecy of decay. As I tried to separate the two wild monkeys from the rigid body of the dead chimpanzee, the photography stopped abruptly. Ty shook the new prize violently, Buster struggled to pry the “toy” away from Ty, and I struggled to return the chimp to his resting place. without actually touching it. I’m sure we had quite an entertaining show.
At least I didn’t scream and fall into the lake. When Rod returned, it was as if nothing had happened.
All of the hikes around Lake Louise are dog-friendly, although your furry friend is sure to get a kick out of it. And not all trails are as difficult as riding them, so grab your pup and plan a day of exploring!
