Dog Friendly Lodging Jamestown Ri – I love Jamestown in 100 ways For many it’s the island between the bridges, the village next to Newport, the exit before the toll booth For me it’s all about the quiet streets, ocean views, historic lighthouses and beautiful parks . You’ll find quiet farms, historic castles, diving spots and seafood menus. Spend the afternoon watching sailboats, sunbathe or swim in the cove When you want to move, try kayaking and drifting while watching tall ships and beautiful bridges. If you want to stay dry, grab a bun and a bike and hit the islands on rolling hills. If you like golf, play 9 holes at a local course When you reach the stage, you hear the sound of burgers

Newport gets all the attention and anyone who knows anything about Jamestown is doing well Jamestown is the mellow, very cool, next door neighborhood to Newport It’s a tiny Newport That means less people and less stress in general Easy to park, easy to walk, friendly the bike and easy to make dinner reservations (but you probably don’t need all of them). You can visit Newport for vineyards, folk festivals, yacht races and nightlife I don’t want to embarrass you I love Newport but Jamestown is where I go when things want to be really slow.

Until this summer I had only spent a day or an afternoon in Jamestown.I would go swimming and dine with friends, or stop on the way home as the Newport crowd drove me over the bridge. Spending three days in Jamestown we had more time to explore the island For this trip I ditched my scuba gear and enjoyed the island on foot and on wheels If you don’t want to leave your dog behind I’m happy to tell you that you don’t have to at this location Jamestown is a dog-friendly destination with plenty of dog-friendly beaches, restaurants and parks.

I stayed with my parents in an RV parked at Fort Getty Park** If you are camping (RV or tent) it is a great home with bathrooms/showers, hiking trails, dog friendly creeks/beaches, boat ramp and boat camping for children. If camping is not your thing, the island has many hotels ranging from budget to luxury Here is a TripAdvisor list of the 10 best accommodations on the island: **Fort Getty is beautiful with the ruins of the historic fort, fishing pier, the boat dock, beach, pavilion, boardwalk, etc., but charges a fee. If you were staying anywhere else on the island, I would save time by skipping Port Getty Parking fee is $20 per day Save more time to visit more exciting state parks that offer free admission

The drive from the coast in central Connecticut to Jamestown is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. I planned to be in Jamestown around 9:30 Friday morning with my two dogs and my six month old baby around noon. As we have a dog we wanted a quiet place close to the main road with easy parking I went to the lovely Village Heart Bakery and Cafe which was dog friendly inside and out The beautiful Jamestown community playground is one of the nicest playgrounds I have seen never and its en-route location makes it an ideal stop if you’re traveling with kids (let them run around and then sit in the courtyard for a nice meal). Lunch was a little pricey ($16 for a sandwich and iced coffee), but we were happy to find a nice little place with friendly staff and a dog-friendly atmosphere.

After lunch, make a quick stop before checking out where you want to stay for the weekend Located in the Windmill Hill Historic District, the Jamestown Windmill has been named one of Jamestown’s most important landmarks. I have to admit that the small site and structure without a sail is a bit of a let down If you want to see this historic 1787 structure, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, pass by as you drive into town or bike around the island.

After lunch, I met my parents at Fort Getty, set up camp, and spent the few hours of relaxation I was here for. Check where you’re staying, grab a drink and enjoy the cool sea breeze

Once open, head to Narragansett Avenue, a main thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants. Jamestown is a great little island for biking if you don’t mind some hills. If you prefer to drive, hop on 2 or 4 wheels and head to Narragansett Avenue for dinner. If you time it right, head to J22 Tap and Table before 6pm for the oyster/clam dollar special. Nothing goes better with an island vacation than a raw bar. This is especially true of bars that cost a lot of money

J22 is known for its excellent food and eating in the small restaurant or on the back patio is a great option. You can also go to one of the restaurants on the strip Cimatico offers a beautiful outdoor patio, the perfect place to enjoy the warm summer nights Chopsticks Charlie’s offers a family seafood restaurant There are also many options from casual fish and chips to fine dining food (see TripAdvisor listing here).

End the night with a drink every time you call home for the weekend Tomorrow is for island hopping

It’s a place where the morning slows down You don’t have to get up and go out early to shake it all up Weekends are a great time for sightseeing on a slower schedule while still finding time to sleep in or read a good book. After the morning rain subsided, we had breakfast and coffee at the campsite When the sky cleared, we went to Beavertail State Park, one of the state parks Here you can see the lighthouse (home to the third oldest lighthouse in the United States) and go inside the Museum Lighthouse. While here, enjoy panoramic views of Narragansett Bay and the boardwalk along the beach. A 2.3-mile hiking trail along the edge of the park offers some exercise and great views along the way (the trail can be a little muddy, so be careful during tick season). This would be a great picnic spot if you decide to bring a blanket and a packed lunch (or a “bag table” which makes picnicking 100 times easier). If you want to sit down to a restaurant for lunch, head downtown for a light meal.

After lunch, rent a kayak or, if you brought your own bike, bike around the island (a short 11-mile loop in the south/central part or a longer 25-mile loop that circles the entire island). You can also play 9 holes at the Jamestown Golf Course If you just want to relax, head into town to browse the shops and enjoy the views of the bay and bridge from East Ferry Beach. Enjoy dinner and drinks and relax for the evening

Enjoy Sunday Breakfast on the Island Pack a few things for the beach and head to Fort Wetherill State Park Fort Wetherill sits on a 100-foot granite peak and was once a coastal defense battery. The area is popular and known for its spectacular views of Newport Harbor and the eastern passage of Narragansett Bay. If you’re in town during Newport’s Tall Ships event or the America’s Cup race, it’s a popular place to watch boats.

Eclipse King Beach is one of the prettiest places in New England and a great place to park lounge chairs, swim, cliff jump, and watch sailboats and divers. This cove is one of the most popular dive spots in New England, so be sure to ask the divers about any interesting creatures they encounter while diving. When you need a break from the beach, check out the rest of the park You’ll come across an abandoned coastal artillery fort that’s now a graffiti canvas and another in the bay.

After the beach and out of town, say goodbye to the island and take a leisurely drive to see some of the city’s lesser-known spots. You’ll find quiet neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, rolling farms, a million rabbits, and quiet little parks and beaches enjoyed by the locals.
