Dog-friendly Winter Vacations Near Me

Dog-friendly Winter Vacations Near Me – We love New England, especially New Hampshire and Vermont. Vermont is one of the nicest states I’ve ever been to. However, our carefully planned vacation to Vermont and New Hampshire with the dog was not as amazing as we had hoped!

This special winter vacation with the dog has some pitfalls, and I don’t mean the trails. Our experience shows that you need to plan carefully to have a successful dog vacation, but when life throws you a curve ball and your carefully planned dog vacation goes off the rails, you need a plan B!

We are planning a great week of skiing. Vermont is very dog friendly and we brought our husky with us from Florida to New Hampshire and then back to Vermont. We can’t wait to go hiking with him in the snow and participate in fun dog friendly activities with him!

Looking For Dog Friendly Roadtrip/camping Recommendations. (more Info In Post)

Waterville Valley, New Hampshire is our favorite, especially in the winter. Waterville Valley Resort has amazing cross-country ski trails that are dog friendly! Our dogs have always loved long walks on this trail. It is beautifully landscaped and runs parallel to the attractive stream. There are also two beautiful pedestrian bridges where you can walk.

We started with a 4 day stay in Waterville Valley and planned to visit Vermont right away. After the first day, everything went according to plan, until this happened…!

I ski, my husband backcountry skis, and we take turns skiing. I had my first day of skiing and my husband the second.

I skied on my first day and it was amazing! The next day it was time for my husband to go skiing. That day I was relaxing in the hotel room with the dog when my husband called. She skied for 2 hours and had the time of her life!

Greta Goes Global

My husband mentioned that he was a bit tired but wanted to explore another avenue. It also plans to ski for half an hour and ski for half an hour, that’s another hour of skiing, and if you’re tired of that, you’re already tired!

Knowing how upset my husband was with any physical activity and knowing the distress he would have, I advised him to “end the day on a high” and head back to the hotel. There are still a few days of skiing to go and I’m not risking either of us getting hurt the next day. Of course, my die-hard fan insisted that he was fine and could easily ski another hour.

“Honey, will you go down to the porch and take the wheelchair?” I said, “What do you need a wheelchair for? Why do you need a chair?”

Of course, he fell and got hurt. He was tired and insisted on skiing, of course.

In fact, he couldn’t walk at all. He fell and hit them hard on the hip and buttock. That was the end of his skiing holiday – the beginning of doing it all on my own. And that was the end of a great winter vacation for our dog. The images of the two of us walking along a long, snowy mountain road soon faded.

My husband doesn’t need a doctor, he just needs his leg to heal completely and rest. We don’t know exactly how long.

The poor husky spent most of his time in the hotel room with nothing to entertain him, not even the snow! I had to walk three times a day, including walking in the hotel parking lot at night. I was busy taking care of all the dogs and had to go out to cook for my husband and I was around that time too. None of the romantic restaurants we were expecting. The pet hotel we stay at does not have room service!

Two days later I drove 200 kilometers to the resort hotel where we planned to stay. If we canceled this part of the trip 48 hours before arrival we would lose 100% of what we paid for the hotel, and that’s not cheap!

Good, good or bad? So I babysat with my husband and dog for the next 5 days and then drove 1,200 miles home.

We live in Florida so I decided to let our snow dog have some fun in the snow. I took our dog’s favorite trail 21 miles from our hotel. John agreed to stay in the car and I drove for about 30 minutes on a beautiful snow track. Here’s a short video of Ice enjoying a winter wonderland!

* How can I get help, maybe another day of skiing.

*I shouldn’t have booked a second hotel that has no refund policy if you cancel within 2 weeks of my stay. We went home 4 days ago.

Winter Road Trip With A Dog

I was so blindsided by my husband’s injuries and complete inability to walk that I did everything and even though our vacation was technically over, I pretended we were hanging in there.

I try to hold on to the bits of fun and beauty that I feel. And when I can take the ice to the snow, it’s so much fun for him!

What about when traveling with your dog do you have any major mistakes or disappointments? Leave a comment and tell us about your experience! There’s something about January that makes me want to sit down with my calendar and plan a bunch of trips for the next year. It’s so cold and dark that curling up with a laptop and planning an adventure is just too much.

Although we put major international travel on hold during the pandemic, we wanted to reacquaint ourselves with the Seattle area for all the wonderful weekend getaways (and dogs!). After living in New York and Chicago for a decade, it’s fun to come back and rediscover old favorites, as well as see all the new and innovative lights, boutique hotels, and unique Airbnbs that have popped up here. I especially love seeing how many dog-friendly options there are for your stay. I am so happy to bring Dave and Lizzie with us on holiday.

Bring your best friend for wine at one of your favorite resorts in the area. We have been hosting Sagecliff Weekends since 2015 and it never disappoints. The hiking, wine tasting, and beautiful views of the Columbia River Valley make it an absolute dream. It depends on their puppy policy.
