Unlike Canada, national parks in the United States are generally not dog-friendly, and Glacier National Park is no exception. Depending on the type of trip you’re taking, taking your dog on a Northwest Montana vacation might be a good idea.
Dog Friendly Lodging Near Glacier National Park
Dogs aren’t allowed on the trails into Glacier National Park, which can be a big deal since trekking is one of the area’s most popular activities. You can bring your dog into the park, and dogs are allowed on trails, campgrounds, and parking lots. Dogs are also allowed on a leash in the backcountry areas (Lot Glacier, Lake Macdonald and Apgar). Dogs are allowed on the bike paths around Apgar and on Highway 2 west of Glacier West.

National forests are more dog-friendly than national parks, and you can park your dog anywhere in the Flathead National Forest. Leashes are required in many areas, but leash laws do not appear to be enforced.
Local municipalities have dog laws and regulations. Peck Park is a small dog park (3.5 acres) south of Kalispell.
Nearby Whitefish hosts the Hugh Rogers WAG Dog Park, voted one of the best dog parks in America. Whitefish also has a loop trail that is ideal for dog walking from town to the beach along the banks of the Whitefish River.

Where To Stay In Glacier National Park → 2024 Guide + Hotels
Forest Service Road 10936: Located 1/2 mile north of Moss Mountain Inn, this trail leads through a heavily forested area to the top of the mountain (2 miles from the inn).
Glacier Rim: This is a Forest Service access point on the North Fork of the Main River, a one-mile walk on North Fork Road, then east 1/4 mile down, 2.5 miles round trip. The walk has views of the Apgar range to the east and eagle nests down by the river.
Bearfoot Trail (#6500) and Waving Bear Trail (#6400): These are multi-use trails with multiple loops 1-5 miles in circumference. Access north of Columbia Falls via Cedar Flats Road (appears as Cedar Lake Road on some maps).

There are few roads on the glacier. One of them runs north and south along the western edge of the park. Highway 2 runs from East Glacier Park Village to West Glacier. And the most popular road, To-the-Sun, runs east and west for 50 kilometers through the center of the park.
The Path to the Sun is the most popular way to visit the park. It takes three hours to drive – each way – with a few photo stops along the way. Why don’t you want to disable photos?
On the way to Sun Road, pets are allowed in developed areas. This means picnic areas, parking lots, and 100 miles of interstate, a long day in the car for your dog.
If you’re driving the Sunlight Road (and you should), plan to make a few stops along the way so your kids can get out and stretch their legs.

Glacier National Park has a dog-friendly trail, and it has no snow. The Macdonald Creek Bike Trail is a 2.5 mile walking trail between West Glacier and Apgar Village.

We recommend taking the trail to West Glacier, get ice cream at Eddy’s on your way to Apkar, relax at Lake MacDonald, and head back to the highlands.

Flathead Lake is amazing. We stayed for a week and would give five stars to a dog friendly place near Glacier National Park. This is a must see if you are visiting western Montana. You’ll find hiking trails, camping, outdoor festivals, boating, swimming and more.
The lake is about an hour’s drive from the west entrance of Glacier National Park. It is the largest salt lake west of the Mississippi River – about 30 miles long and 16 miles wide. Therefore, your travel time may vary slightly depending on which part of the lake you travel to.
Most of the area around Machairo Lake was part of the Flathead Indian Reservation established by the Hellgate Treaty in 1855. There are three tribes in the region: the Bitterroot Salish, the Upper Bend d’Oreille, and the Kootenay.
In addition to the national park, six Montana state parks have ski resorts on the shores of Flathead Lake. All of these make up Loch An Muir State Park. Five areas of the state park are pet-friendly and allow dogs on a leash:

Yellow Bay only offers tent sites (first come, first served), but other dog resorts offer tents and RVs. Some even have campsites for hiking, biking or boating! Cool Whip, Hercules and I camped in our truck at Wayfarers, Big Arm and West Shore. Each offered a slightly different experience, so there were plenty of fun parks around the lake.
Two of my favorite things about these parks are the many pet litter boxes and the free run area. They make it easy to clean up after your dog and enjoy safe, pet-friendly trips!
