The pre-departure process took Helena about four months. As you can imagine, there is a lot of paperwork and medical requirements to complete in both Europe and Singapore. Helen had to make sure Coco got used to her airlines’ long-haul flights, which meant spending time on airline training. Fortunately, Coco has been potty trained since she was a baby, so she can usually pee and poop whenever she wants. So he had no problem on board as he relieved himself in the airport bathroom before boarding.
Can You Really Travel To Europe Car-free
Because of strict quarantine controls like rabies vaccinations, rabies serology tests and all the paperwork, they spent countless sleepless nights trying to read the quarantine requirements. This was the most important stage as they did not want to risk Koko being quarantined in a foreign country and/or en route to Singapore. Many countries require rabies vaccination, annual basic vaccination etc. Before arrival therefore, if you plan to take your dog abroad, ensure that all documentation is filled out correctly.
The most difficult step for Helen was creating the schedule and digesting the required documentation for both the foreign country and Singapore.
After all, the last thing she wants is for Coco to be quarantined (or unable to enter overseas) upon her return to Singapore for lack of necessity.
Another challenge is situations out of your control, such as you cannot predict or control how your dog behaves and whether he is uncomfortable hearing increased air pressure or constant engine noise. Additionally, dogs must be well-behaved on the plane (no barking or barking) and must remain in the carrier throughout the flight. Also, you don’t know if your front, back or next-door neighbors are dog-sensitive. You may find them difficult. 🙁

Additionally, Helen and her husband had to find pet-friendly accommodation in Europe, as not all hotels are dog-friendly. Fortunately, they found that about 70% of hotels in Europe accept dogs, which makes things easier.
Perhaps Coco’s meals need to be planned in advance as she follows a raw or home-cooked diet. However, this means they have to find accommodation with a small kitchen where they can properly store their food in the hotel fridge.
First, you need to microchip your dog. Microchip implantation can be done at any accredited veterinarian for a nominal fee. A microchip is a unique, permanent identifier that permanently links your name and contact information to your dog.
After your dog is microchipped, the next step is to vaccinate him against rabies. The rabies vaccine should be given after the microchip is implanted, not before. The minimum vaccination period is at least 21 days before your dog arrives in the EU. Your dog must be at least 12 weeks old (although there are some exceptions for new dogs).

As Singapore is a ‘listed’ country, your dog does not need to be blood tested for rabies antibodies to enter the EU.
Often a licensed veterinarian can issue a veterinary health certificate at the office – be sure to ask. Otherwise, you will need to print the certificate and take it to the vet to complete. Before visiting the vet, print the correct health certificate based on your country of birth. Also, ensure that the certificate is for non-commercial transport of animals.
When traveling from a non-EU country such as Singapore, your dog must have an EU Animal Health Certificate issued by the country’s official veterinarian in the country of departure 10 days prior to your dog’s arrival in the EU.
The certificate is valid for travel between EU countries for 4 months or until the rabies vaccination expires, whichever comes first.
Can I Take My Dog On The Train?
In addition, you must complete your pet’s EU animal health certificate and attach a written declaration that your move is for non-commercial reasons. This declaration is required even if your pet is traveling under the supervision of a person authorized by you. In this case, your pet must be reunited with you within 5 days of removal.
If you are traveling with your dog to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland, you must treat your dog for Echinococcus tapeworm 24-120 hours before travel. All medical information must be entered in your pet’s passport or EU health certificate.
Helen and her husband were relieved and proud that Coco managed the flight well. Unlike some crying or noisy children, he did not make noise or disturb other passengers. In fact, some passengers didn’t even realize Coco was on the plane until it was time to land!
Because Coco is not a service dog or emotional support animal (ESA), she had to stay in her carrier the entire 13-hour flight to Germany, which she did, when they took her to the bathroom to pee. He’s usually a lap dog, which means he likes to lie down, daydream, and not do much around the house (except watch Helen work). He is a low-energy dog, and Helen believes these traits make it easier for him to handle long-haul flights. If your dog is hyper, territorial or easily excited, you may want to consider taking him outside.

Coco and her family arrived in Frankfurt, rented an SUV and traveled through Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein. A total of 5 countries in about 3 weeks!
Coco’s most memorable moment in Europe was at Jungfraujoch (Switzerland), the continent’s highest train station, at 3,454 meters above sea level. The observatory is located at an altitude of 3571 meters, which is very high for a railway station. It is nicknamed the Jungfraujoch (or “Peak of Europe”) despite not being the highest peak in Europe. Opened in 1912, this train station is located directly below the Sphinx Observatory and is connected to the tallest building in Europe.
The experience of riding the cable car and then transferring to the train was incredible with spectacular views. The ladies exclaimed that it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! And Coco loved it because it was her first time walking on ice. Fortunately, Helen brought Coco’s boots so her paws wouldn’t freeze. It was summer, so they didn’t bring him enough warm clothes because they didn’t expect it to be so cold. Coco was shivering in the snow mountain with three thin blouses and Helen’s scarf! :/
