Best Dog Friendly Hikes Bay Area
The six-mile hike to Cataract Falls near Mount Tamalpais is a spectacular waterfall. This is a challenging trail that offers visitors more than two miles of water. The trail follows Cataract Creek as it descends Mount Tamalpais and flows into Alpine Lake. This is a pleasant trip all year round, but its full beauty is revealed in the colder months. In winter and spring, the grass is soft, the trees are full of moss, the streams are bubbling, and the wildflowers are abundant. As the year progresses, the vegetation fades and the maples glow with autumn colors.
Dog Friendly Hikes In Bay Area
Hikers take the Beach End Trail for views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands, but dogs love this trail too! Many people choose to do this hike as a short hike, but working dogs need different conditions on this 3.5 mile loop. The dirt road starts at the Sutro Baths, and hikers pass several places before seeing Mile Rock Beach, passing through eucalyptus groves and winding by a hidden battery.
There are always happy dogs walking this 3.6 mile trail in Belmont. This method is easy to explain with two loops. The short inner loop is a wooded trail that follows the shores of Dog Water Lake in a small valley. Although many owners let their dogs swim in the pool, the water can be cloudy and cloudy and may not be safe for dogs. It’s still nice to sit on a bench or take a short jet walk and watch the ducks swim.
The Sunny Outer Trail (Lake Loop Trail and John Brooks Trail) is a scenic trail popular with hikers. The trail runs along the upper part of the valley and is sunny and can be very hot in the summer months. While parts of the outer loop are shaded, most trails are unshaded.
On a clear day, Sweeney Ridge offers visitors a beautiful view of San Francisco Bay and the stunning coastline and Pacific Ocean. This challenging 7.2-mile hike in Pacifica also includes the Nike Rocket Museum and San Francisco Bay Area Discovery. The route combines large stone fire roads, dirt roads and narrow single roads that wind through the coastal forest. Depending on the weather, hikers may be lucky enough to spot a rabbit or two along the way. Walkers can access the trail in a variety of ways, but my favorite is the entrance behind the Shelldance Orchid Gardens.

With more than 1,900 acres of protected natural habitat, the Adobe Creek Trail in the Palo Alto Baylands is a destination for bird watchers and families. The seven-mile trail begins at the Lucy Evans Baylands Interpretive Center and circles the salt marshes of the Palo Alto Baylands. If you want a shorter hike, choose the 1.7 mile Byxbee Hills trail and Mayfield Slough hike.
Baylands beach conditions change with the tides, but bird watching is always good, especially during migration. A good portion of the Adobe Creek Palo Alto Baylands Trail runs between two marshes, allowing hikers to traverse both sides of the trail. On one side of the road you can see hundreds of ducks happily swimming and wading through the slow moving water, while on the other side of the road Sand Pipers are slowly rolling the sand piles with their beaks.
Is whale watching with your dog your idea of a perfect day? Then head to the Slide Mountain Trail for an easy 3.5 mile hike. Located between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, the dog-friendly paved trail is popular with hikers and bikers. With spectacular views year-round, the Devil’s Slide Trail that runs along old Highway 1 is the best place to see whales on a clear day. The trail sits atop a mountain and hikers are treated to incredible views and the soothing sound of waves crashing on the rocks below. During the day, you may be lucky enough to see a gray whale or a humpback whale or display its fins as it dives into the sea. Many benches are scattered along the route making it a great place to relax, enjoy the view and soak up the sun.
You don’t have to leave town to find dog tracks. Glen Canyon Park is a 70 acre area divided between Glen Park and the Diamond Heights areas of San Francisco. This 1.7-mile trail in Glen Canyon Park is a dog-friendly trail that winds over spectacular scenery and dips into bay trees at the bottom of the canyon. As you cross Islais Creek, one of San Francisco’s few flowing rivers, you may forget you’re still in the middle of the city.
Pet-friendly Getaways Near San Francisco
An easy two-mile trail along Moss Beach is also known as the Mavericks Cliffs Trail because of the great views of the famous Mavericks surf break. Although Mavericks’ waves are not being recorded, the Pillar Point hike offers spectacular views of Half Moon Bay Harbor, a farm near the ocean’s mountains, and the Pillar Point Air Force Tracking Station.
You’ll want to bring some binoculars, as bird and whale watching is best from the top of the mountain. There is a variety of seabirds to see and hawks and raptors that hunt on the dunes and marshes. If it’s not whale watching time, you can look for seals. The secluded waters and beaches of the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve can be seen from the mountain, and at small seals the waves gather on the rocks below.
San Francisco’s Presidio Park has 24 miles of hiking trails that pass through eucalyptus groves, beaches, and historic battery circles. While not all trails and beaches in the park are dog friendly, there are plenty to choose from. This 8 mile loop is one of my favorite trails in the Presidio. During this trip, you will find cypress groves and flower dunes. You will be walking along Baker Beach, San Francisco’s only beach. You will visit not one, but two paintings by Andy Goldsworthy, and last but not least, you will be treated to a breathtaking view of the Golden Gate Bridge as you walk along the amazing stones.
