When I first moved back to the Bay Area, finding a place to walk the dogs was a huge struggle! My single friends might ask me to go to Point Reyes (you can’t go) or Muir Woods (you can’t go)… or any number of other places. We did a lot of digging, hiked many beautiful trails and finally made a routine of walking our dogs!

Pulgas Ridge is my place when I want to do real hiking with trees and dirt.. but I also only have an hour. This is usually my weekday summer walk before sunset or my Saturday morning walk before lunch. The parking lot is small, which means the trails usually aren’t very crowded and the pups love smelling all the different smells here. If you have trees and bushes you will sometimes find a lot of ticks in that area. But I never had any problem here and I have been struggling with this problem for a year.

There are several hikes in Pacifica that could have been on this list, but if I really had to choose, I’d go with Sweeney Ridge. It’s easy, there’s no struggle where you get back and when you reach the top of the ridge the view is almost immediately uninterrupted.

Mount Tamalpais, or Tam as the locals call it, is located in Marin County and is famous for its sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean. Most Mt. Tam does not allow dogs, but there is a trail called the Cataract Falls Trail that is a dog-friendly hike.
Cataract Falls Trail is a 3-mile hike that takes you up to 1,000 feet in elevation. You will be rewarded with a view of Cataract Falls. It’s especially beautiful right now because of the historic rainfall we’ve seen in the Bay Area!

Located in the Marin Headlands, this counterclockwise loop departs from Rodeo Beach and offers recreational stops along the way. Although there are steep stairs, your dogs will love climbing this path.

Massachusetts — Hike With Your Dog
Pulgas Ridge Preserve is located in Redwood City, near Highway 280. This is one of the best dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area because you can hike outside with your dog! Climb the Poly Gerack Trail and connect with the Hassler Trail to return home. The entire circuit takes just under 3 miles, about 50 minutes.

The route then descends to Mori Point, a picturesque coastal spot with spectacular views of the sea and rocky cliffs. The trail is moderately difficult and dog-friendly, with several benches and picnic areas along the way.
If you just want to walk towards the Pacific, you can head straight towards Mori Point. Maury Point runs along the Pacific and area and the entire area is dog friendly! We love walking on the beach on a warm sunny day.
Trees And Tents
Although dogs are not allowed on Mount Diablo, they are allowed in Diablo Foothills Regional Park. Ride the 5.6-mile Castle Rock Loop via the Fairy Lantern Trail for spectacular views of the surrounding Diablo Foothills. You can meet cows!
