Absolutely not! Napa Valley is a haven for dogs, from wineries to restaurants to some very nice hiking trails. Additionally, there are many shops in downtown Napa, St. Helena and Calistoga dog friendly.

Dogs must be well-behaved for wine tasting in Napa, which means aggressive dogs are not allowed. Dogs must be on a leash at all times during testing and under the supervision of their owners.
They should not be allowed to run loose or mingle with other guests (unless, of course, the guest is another dog lover offering to pet your fluff ball!). I recommend bringing treats and water (these open dog bowls are great for travel) to keep your dog occupied during the breath test.

I recommend visiting small boutique wineries with your dogs for a more relaxed wine tasting experience (see my post below for planning). Since reopening in 2020, almost all wine tastings are by appointment only and reservations can easily be made online, by phone or email.
Many wineries can offer guided tours of their facilities and vineyards for an additional fee. If you plan to attend, please confirm that dogs are also allowed. Unless you specifically have a service dog (which is allowed everywhere), most visitors are off limits to dogs.

Unlike other California wine regions like Carmel Valley, Lodi or Sonoma or Santa Ynez Valley, wine tasting in Napa is a penny. Tasting fees start at $25 and can go up to $100, depending on the winery and wine flight selected. Of course, many wineries waive the tasting fee or offer a discount with the purchase of one or more bottles of wine or if you are a member of a wine club.
Yes, Downtown Napa is dog friendly. There are several restaurants (Gott’s Roadside and Napa General Store) that welcome dogs. Tasting rooms like Trehan Winery also welcome dogs. You are not allowed inside the Oxbow Market with dogs, but once you order your food, you can sit outside on the shaded patio and eat.

This dog-friendly Napa winery is an estate winery that overlooks acres of land that once housed famous racehorses (hence the name). In its latest incarnation, it is now home to some of the best cabinets in Napa Valley.
At Black Stallion, you are greeted by a spacious tasting room and a large, shaded patio overlooking the estate’s vineyards. Here, visitors can relax on deeply cushioned patios while enjoying delicious charcuterie, both red and white. This dog-friendly winery welcomes well-behaved dogs on leashes and is perfect for dog parents visiting Napa for the first time.
Chimney Rock Winery is one of Napa’s most beautiful wine tasting venues, with a stunning whitewashed Spanish Mission style building overlooking rows and rows of vineyards. The winery specializes in some of the finest handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon from the heart of Napa’s Stag’s Leap District.

Tucked away on South Whitehall Lane in St. Helena, this woman-owned and operated winery is Napa’s most beautiful dog-friendly winery, with a Zen tasting experience unmatched by any other winery in the valley. This winery loves both dogs and sustainable practices and is a certified organic company with 12 acres of vineyards growing mostly Zinfandel grapes and some cabbage.
All wine tasting takes place in its beautiful outdoor garden overlooking the vineyard where you will be surrounded by olive, lemon and pomegranate trees. Because of the attention to detail and personal service, tastings are scheduled and reservations are required. They’re also incredibly dog-friendly, with the owner and assistant winemaker’s dogs (a labrador and two very friendly golden retrievers) comfortably roaming the property.
