Consider bringing your toys to New York City during our warmer months – around April and October. There are plenty of adventures and a wide selection of trails to enjoy when the weather is nice. It’s even better to visit the park in the sun than in the cold!
Almost all restaurants allow dogs at outdoor tables. If you walk around the West Side (especially Amsterdam or Columbus), Chelsea (especially 8th and 9th avenues), the East Village, or the West Village, you’ll find sidewalks that your dog will sit on to enjoy!
Walking the dog is the best activity in the city! Trains allow dogs if they are in the carriage – and the term “carriage” is loosely defined. I carry Alice in a small lightweight tote that I can roll up and put in my purse. He sits on my lap and stares at other passengers until they laugh at him 🙂 I’ve seen big dogs in rare cases, like bags on trains, and I’ve also seen lots of dogs walking. . There are no bags on the train. Most travelers don’t mind, as long as the dog is well behaved and you’re not traveling during rush hour! As far as I can tell, if your dog isn’t in a carrier, the worst that can happen is to skip the train or pay a $25 fine.
Taxis in New York City must accommodate pets for all passengers—but sometimes they do. If this happens, wait for the next taxi you see and they will accept your dog without a problem. Alice and I use the elevator. After asking for a ride, I’ll text the driver and ask if it’s okay to sit on the dog’s lap—they always say okay.

Many stores allow dogs, as long as they don’t serve food. Alice comes shopping with me all the time – mostly at Zara, Old Navy and home goods. It’s delicious 🙂 So if you want to go shopping in SoHo or 5th Ave, you’ll find plenty of stores that welcome your dog. Liquor stores are also dog friendly (I’ve never met a liquor store in town that doesn’t allow alice) and they usually have dog treats!
Many liquor stores and wine stores offer tastings, which would be a great activity for dogs. I highly recommend Roma Wines at Amsterdam & W 95th St or Columbus Avenue Wine & Spirits. They always have friendly staff and treat Alice (she pulls me in the door when we come in), and they often make wine!
Starbucks and other coffee shops around town are too cool for dogs and people to order. I want to go with Alice to order from the app and grab our drinks on the way to Central Park. If you’re on the Upper West Side, go to the Starbucks at 86th and Columbus and expect to meet the amazing barista who paints pictures of dogs on dog bowls!
Some places like Duane Reade and CVS don’t mind if you bring a dog, while other places don’t allow dogs or make you bring your own dog – it depends on the manager.

Our favorite bar! Vin Sur Vingt has a few locations in Manhattan, but the Upper West Side is the best. Sitting on the street with a glass of French wine will transport you to Paris!
Grand Banks is a bar and restaurant on a floating boat along the Hudson’s wharf. You’ll have a great view of the World Trade Center and lower Manhattan, and it’s a great spot to watch the sunset over the river. Make reservations well in advance!

This is one of my favorite sunset spots! I recommend entering Riverside Park at W. 98th and Riverside and walking north along the boardwalk until you reach an outdoor bar with picnic tables. Simple, but delicious, and hot drink! It’s popular with dogs and people alike, so you might have to wait a bit for a table on weekends.
I love going to this cute cafe on weekends. It can get crowded, but dogs are allowed inside.

Another incredible sunset on the Hudson! Enter the park at Riverside & W 72nd and continue west, through the lane, under the stairs, and turn left (south) onto the waterfront. You will see Pier Eye Cafe behind the baseball field. The pier next to the cafe hosts lots of fun events in the summer!
Amazing views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, and Williamsburg Bridge. There’s a kiosk where you can buy cheap beer… or you can bring your own food and drinks (non-alcoholic of course…) and soak up the sun with your kid and some friends. There are a few restaurants here at Pier 17, but I don’t know if they allow dogs on the nice patio. South Harbor also has several restaurants with outdoor seating.
