This glacier is one of the few places in North America where our native carnivores still live. Grizzly and black bears, wolves and cougars roam the lush slopes and valleys. Protecting national parks and their residents means strict restrictions on where pets can go.

There are only a few roads in the glacier. One runs north and south along the western edge of the park. A second route runs from East Glacier Park Village to West Glacier and its most famous road, the Going-to-the-Sun Road. It runs east and west through the center of the park for 50 miles.

For great hiking Instead, head south into one of the national forests with your pup. Flathead, Kootenay, and Lewis & Clark National Forests are all within easy driving distance. And all trails in all national forests are pet friendly!
In fact Dogs are allowed on leash in most national forest areas. But because of the local wildlife So it’s not a good idea without an extremely reliable recall.
Hungry Horse Reservoir in the Flathead National Forest is especially beautiful. And these paths feel like yours alone.
The Best Pet-friendly Hotels In Glacier National Park, United States Of America
Flathead Lake is amazing. We spent a week visiting and gave five stars for this dog-friendly adventure near Glacier National Park. This is an absolute must if you are visiting western Montana. You’ll find hiking trails, camping, outdoor festivals, canoeing, swimming, and so much more.
The lake is about an hour from the western entrance to Glacier National Park. It is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. It is approximately 30 miles long and 16 miles wide, so your travel time may vary slightly depending on which side of the lake you are visiting.
Most of the surrounding area Flathead Lake is part of the Flathead Indian Reservation. It was established in 1855 by the Treaty of Holgate. Three tribes lived in the area: the Bitterroot Salish, Upper Pend d’Oreille, and Kootenay.
In addition to tribal land Six Montana state parks also lie along the shores of Flathead Lake. Together, these units make up Flathead Lake State Park. Five park units are pet-friendly and allow dogs on leashes:

Yellow Bay only offers tent camping. (first come, first served) but other dog-friendly campgrounds offer both tent and RV sites. Some even have campsites for hiking, biking, or boating! Awesome Hercules and I camped in our van at Wayfarers, Big Arm, and West Shore, each with a slightly different experience. So it was a lot of fun camping around the lake.
Two of my favorite features of these parks are the many pet litter boxes and the free hiking stations. Makes it super easy to clean up your dog and enjoy a safe, pet-friendly adventure!
Wayfarers is a beautiful 67-acre wooded area tucked away in Bigfork, Montana. We have a large North Coast (Minnesota) setting with pine trees clinging to the rocky shoreline. And it’s the perfect vantage point for watching the sunset after a day of adventure.
If you prefer an urban trail with fewer wildlife opportunities, check out the Swan River Trail in Bigfork. It’s an easy 3-mile walk with great views of the Swan River.
East Vs West Glacier National Park
The city of Bigfork is also great if you enjoy art, theater, live music, film festivals, art festivals, farmers markets, and even dog sledding in the winter! Bigfork also has several pet-friendly lodging options if you’re not ready to camp.
This is my favorite stop. And maybe dogs too. Park rangers handed out dog treats when we arrived. West Shore is the place to go if you’re looking for a getaway surrounded by nature. The campsite is set in a vast pine forest. which allows you to breathe fully
But don’t waste your time sleeping! There are several trails that crisscross the park. Take the Osprey Overlook Trail to the top of the mountain for beautiful views. Then descend to Linderman Lookout to the beach path. The view through the trees to Flathead Lake is amazing!
At the lake, you can enjoy snacks at the picnic tables. Or hop over the many smooth, brightly colored rocks that make up the coastline.
Visiting Glacier National Park With Dogs
Cool Whip: Don’t want your feet wet. But your dog can! Dogs are allowed along the beach and in the water. As long as there is no signal interruption
If you and your adventurous pup want to park along the water, Big Arm is the park for you! Just remember to bring leveling blocks if you are staying in a van or motorhome. Because you are very close to the beach. Many campsites therefore have uneven terrain. But it’s worth the trouble! There’s nothing like cooking dinner and enjoying a bonfire by the lake.
Kalispell, Montana was one of Outside magazine’s fastest-growing cities in 2021, just 30 minutes from Glacier National Park. Flathead Lake, ski resorts, and many state and national forests. Just outside of town is Lone Pine State Park, which has a variety of hiking trails. (No camping)

At the southern end of Flathead Lake is the town of Polson. This quaint little community has a lot to offer, including cute cafes, museums, antique shops, and more.
Polson is also home to the Flathead Cherry Festival. During the festival, the main street in downtown Polson is closed to traffic for two days to celebrate the cherry with vendors, artists, and lots of delicious food. Can’t go to the festival? Many cherry orchards grow well in this area. So you’ll see many signs with cherries for sale when they’re in season.
Do you want your dog to play on a leash? Go to the Travis Dolphin Dog Park. On the hill there is space for running and playing. Includes a dock and access to the water if your pup likes to swim.
