Its three bedrooms are set in an 18th-century corn mill, and are all about a little luxury and a little quirky detail; Think Dali-inspired clocks hanging from original brick fireplaces, ceramic dog ornaments guarding your bedroom door and en-suite bathrooms with glorious showers. This charming bar with rooms is 10 minutes’ walk from the regal Holkham Hall, which is great for walking, dog walking and cycling (with bikes and dog leashes available for hire), but best of all is the huge beach in sand spread in just 10 minute. It may look like it was built in the 12th century, but Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa is actually a 19th century building built from architectural salvage – think the medieval doors and turn-of-the-century windows. But apart from its ancient origins, it serves excellent, locally sourced food and offers a relaxing seaside spa. Dogs can eat with you in the lounges and roam around the garden on a lead (watch out for peacocks) and you can leave them in the room while you enjoy the heated outdoor pool where you can swim to the sound of the waves. Don’t let the word ‘hostel’ put you off, because The Rocks in Place Curig is the ultimate budget travel destination. Run by a dog owner, a born and bred Snowdonian, this place has thought of everything from the little nooks in the elegant communal areas to snuggle the dog while you eat or cook in the modern kitchen, to the charming fire pit, which overlooks Llynnau . Mymbyr. On a clear day you can see straight across the water to Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) and there are many walks right on the hostel’s doorstep; The national park is truly a dog’s playground.
There’s a lot to love about Lovat, not least because it’s only a short distance from Scotland’s most famous beach, Loch Ness. The restaurant here is charming and dog-friendly, and offers a tasting menu and delicious dishes based on local produce. Accommodation for dog owners is in the Garden Rooms at the rear of the main house, a 19th-century building with timber-framed walls and lovely lounges to relax in and have their own private dog-friendly balcony. There is a walled lawn in front of the hotel for a play area before bed, as well as many walks along the Caledonian Canal and around Loch Ness itself. Downtown hotels don’t get much more dog-friendly than this one. “If it fits in the elevator, it’s allowed in,” is the policy at Kimpton hotels, and Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square property has a bonus for dog owners looking to explore the Scottish capital. The walled lawns in the middle of the square are only for residents, and as a resident of the hotel you get a key to the garden, which seems to be playing casually in a safe area in the heart of the city. Princes Street Gardens and the Old Town are just a short walk away, and the on-site Baba restaurant is dog-friendly and serves the best black sweet potatoes you’ll ever taste.
Six acres of grounds and two nearby 18-hole golf courses will keep you entertained in Slieve Donard, and dogs will love a run on Murlough Beach (although be sure to keep them above the nature reserve). The hotel itself is a stunning red brick Victorian with elegant bedrooms and a relaxing spa. Dogs are allowed in most public areas of the hotel, including the restaurant and bar, after a day on a leash.
