Dog Friendly Vacations Virginia – If you don’t already know, I’m from Virginia. I’ve lived here most of my life, except I was born in Florida and went to college in New York. Despite being here for many years, I have the feeling that I haven’t seen and done as much as I would like. I used to write about our travels and adventures, but today I got a little selfish and wrote about the pet-friendly places I want to visit in Virginia.
The park is located on the John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake) on the Roanoke River in southern Virginia. There are pet-friendly campgrounds and cabins on site, but pet fees may apply. The park, of course, also has water features and trails. This state park has 20 miles of trails ideal for hiking, biking and horseback riding. We hope to camp at Oconeechee this year!

This winery is very dog friendly (or at least according to the reviews) and also allows dogs in the tasting room, which I consider very important when visiting a pet friendly winery. Three Forks Vineyards are only 45 minutes away, so we will definitely be visiting soon!
Dog-friendly Vacation Spots
Not all national parks allow this, but luckily Shenandoah National Park does. Although I had been there a few times, such as on field trips as a child, I had never been there with Luna before. This national park offers pet-friendly trails (over 500 miles!) and camping. There are some trails that are not dog friendly, so check before you go. Shenandoah National Park is just an hour and a half from Northern Virginia, so we’ll be there soon!
If you grew up in Northern Virginia, you almost had to visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate at least once. I’ve been there many times, but it seems like a long time ago! I was surprised to discover that Mount Vernon actually offers dog walking tours! All the President’s Pups Walking Tour is a 2.00-mile tour where participants can bring their dogs and learn about George Washington’s love of dogs. Dogs are also allowed in Mount Vernon, but are not permitted in historic buildings, museums or stores.
Virginia is home to 544 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and while I’ve hiked some of them, I definitely haven’t conquered them all. Dogs are allowed on all but three sections of the Virginia Trail (one each in Maine, New York, and North Carolina). Dogs also need to be leashed on many sections of the trail. I hope to see most, if not all, of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia in the next few years.
This city almost has to be on my list because it’s my last name. I don’t know if it’s pet-friendly, but I feel like it’s a place I must visit before I die, even though there were only 507 people living there in the 2010 census!

At our pet-friendly Virginia cabins, you can easily access trails, walk your dog, and enjoy the natural beauty of our backyard. Love Gap is less than a mile from your Love Ridge mountain cabin and offers easy access to the Appalachian Trail from the dog-friendly, leashed Blue Ridge Parkway. The wide trail offers plenty of space and a stable base, and since it’s an out-and-back route, you can take the longer 4-mile hike to Mountain B or turn around when your pup wants to head back.
Another option, located about 2 miles from Love Ridge in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest, is the White Rock Falls Loop Trail, where dogs can walk along the trail as long as they are on a leash. We recommend parking at White Rock Gap, about 4.5 miles away, relatively high on the ridge. A little further is the Crabtree Falls Adventure Trail, one of the most impressive and rewarding hikes in the region. The full trail loop is less than 3 miles long, but you’ll reach your first view of the falls within minutes by following the paved trail. If you and your dog are up for the challenge, continue enjoying the climb as you encounter several waterfalls. It can be icy all winter, especially after a snowstorm, but this is one of our favorite winter hikes, and the colder months are the perfect time of year to avoid the crowds that pack this trail during the winter months. peak of summer.

We are fortunate that Sherando Lake, “the crown jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains,” is just 10 minutes away and almost directly below the ridge line. If your dog loves being near the water, he’ll love the sandy shore and shallow waters of Lower Sherando Lake, which spans over 25 acres and is perfect for a day of relaxation in a beautiful setting. Although dogs are not allowed on the main beach, you can stroll along the lakeshore where you will find other coves and beaches where you can spend a relaxing day. Park rules state that dogs must always be on a leash and under your control. If you like fishing, take your pup to the smaller Lake Superior on the Lake Superior Trail. Upper Lake is fed by fresh spring water from Back Creek and is one of the best fishing spots in the region, ideal for trout, bass, bluegill and catfish. If you’re looking for a fun hike in Sherando, hike to White Rock Gap with your pup and have a friend pick him up in the car.

Plan a day in Staunton, less than 40 minutes north of our pet-friendly cabins in Virginia, where you have plenty of options for pet-friendly plans in and around the quaint downtown area. Dog day. The morning started with a visit to the Gypsy Mountain Dog Park, which takes the dog park concept to a new level. Unlike other dog parks, which are small square patches surrounded by grass, Gypsy Hill Park is large, with stairs, tunnels and routes for your dog to climb, and offers separate areas for small and large pups. Little details like a dog-friendly fountain add charm, and the nearby lake provides a picturesque backdrop. If you are traveling as a family to Virginia with children or teenagers, they will have fun at the playground and skate park, making it an ideal trip for the whole family.
Then head to downtown Staunton, where you’ll find the Riverfront Farmers’ Market every Saturday morning from spring through fall. Dogs on leash are welcome at the market, and the first market of 2024 will open the season on April 6th. As the warmer days of spring and summer arrive, visit local vendors and enjoy live music. After the market, walk across the street to Well-Balanced Paw, one of the most unique and charming pet stores you’ll find anywhere. The owners are trained in small animal massage therapy to massage puppies, and their selection of all-natural treats is a far cry from the mass-produced, preservative-packed treats at the supermarket. You can choose from their “raw food bars” which include artisanal foods like yak milk, cow hooves, chicken feet and salmon skins – dog treats that, just as nature intended, are great for your dog. .
