When I travel around Australia in a caravan I will undoubtedly leave my little dachshund Schnitzel behind. After all, he is part of my family and wherever we go, he goes too.
Fortunately, holidaying with your pet in Australia has become easier in recent years, with an increasing number of pet-friendly accommodation options, from boutique motels and holiday rentals to caravan parks and farm stays.
Before taking your dog on its first long car ride, make sure your dog is comfortable on short trips. Puppies often get car sickness, but it usually goes away as they get older. Chewing ginger is also effective. Car seats for small dogs can also help you see out the window.

Victoria is the most pet-friendly state. In Melbourne, dogs of all sizes are allowed on metropolitan trains as long as they are on a leash and muzzled or in a container. Small pets in appropriate containers are also allowed on trams, buses and local V/Line train services.
