Leder: I know there are people who live in houses where there are no dogs on the furniture. These people deserve this recognition and will probably make themselves known in the comments section (please do so and give me any advice on how to do this). The rest of us need something safer. I was recently looking for a new sofa and since my life revolves around my dog, I had to ask what is recommended for dogs (especially ones that shed a TON). I said leather is the most often recommended option for dog owners, which is no surprise. The leather is easy to clean and hair does not stick to it. Of course, real leather resists scratches better, but faux leather is just as easy to clean – just not as durable.

Tight fabric: If you don’t like skin and want something more comfortable, fear not. Some fabrics are very durable and stain resistant. My research shows that the denser the weave, the better (think chenille and herringbone – the textured fabric that hides the hair – but be careful if your dog is a digger as the nails can damage them). Synthetic fabrics like microfiber are also high on the pet (and kid-friendly) list because they can be spot cleaned with most carpet cleaners and pet hair is easier to remove with lint rollers and vacuums. If you still want a woven fabric, consider matching the fabric to your dog’s hair color as closely as possible, unless you don’t mind seeing hair everywhere. And I mean it

Velvet: About half of us swear by velvet and the other half will think I’m crazy in the comments section. I actually wrote a post about it last year and found that synthetic velvet is more dog and kid friendly because it is more scratch resistant and easier to clean and keep hair free. So if you are looking for velvet furniture, choose synthetic or performance velvet for the best results.

Cowhide: I have a white rug, and even with the occasional wine spill and my dog, it somehow stays spotless. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s the easiest cleaning I’ve ever had the pleasure of doing (and I hate cleaning). If you arrive at the scene of the accident quickly enough, you can usually remove the stain immediately with a cloth and a little water. However, if it is a more stubborn stain, detergent works like magic. In my experience, even faux cowhide is easy to clean simply because the hairs are long enough that you can clean the leather and rub it back and forth without fear of damaging it. Emily also swears by cowhide rugs for dirty kids and pets.
Vintage Persian carpet: If you have ever owned an old Persian carpet, you know that it can take a beating, but the best thing is that its age and wear are part of its charm. This makes accidents and scratches less of a problem, and if they do stain, the complicated patterns can easily cover them. We know they are an investment, but Emily and Sara guarantee the Persian stain resistance, and even if they are cat owners, I trust their judgment. 🙂

Now for the cleaning part, the dog owner has the biggest hill to climb. It’s safe to say that regular cleaning tools just aren’t enough for a dog-friendly home. We need durable tools that are specifically designed to 1. clean hair and 2. remove pet odors and stains. Here are the top tips:

1. Cover the furniture. Invest in inexpensive but stylish blankets or quilts that you’d love to see every day. Throws work too, but blankets can be more visually interesting and do not require constant putting on and taking off. With some large sheets you can drape them over the furniture and if an accident happens or things start to get too dirty, you can switch to another one. I do this for my couch and bed. When it’s time for people to relax, it’s as easy as pulling off the dog blanket.

2. Throw blankets everywhere. Dog snuggles up where it is most comfortable. If you want to try to keep your pup off the furniture, you can almost take a break at this point by placing a throw or two on a rug. One of us suggested taking a large IKEA sheepskin rug, cutting it into small sections and spreading it around the house. I just want to say that I love this idea and I will steal it.
3. Keep the trash close. I know experienced dog owners know this, but it’s worth pointing out. Covered litter boxes are non-negotiable, even if your dog is on his best behavior. No one wants to come home and see yesterday’s torn pizza box on the carpet. If your little “angel” is a bit more mischievous, store the litter in a cupboard if possible. We’ve all seen what dogs can do when they focus on something. That is why it is better to keep the scents as close to you as possible to avoid any temptation.
