Dog Friendly Vacations Louisiana – This post is part of the Ultimate Pet-Friendly Road Trip series, a 10-month, 15,000-mile tour of the pet-friendly attractions in each of the lower 48 states.

In 1931, at the beginning of the Great Depression, the governor of Louisiana came up with a bold plan. Huey P. Long wanted to build the tallest state capitol, built with limestone and marble from Vermont and Italy. He convinced people that an efficient and modern structure would save the country’s economy. The building took just 14 months and $5 million to complete.

At 34 stories, the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge remains the tallest state capitol in the United States. Its grounds and gardens spread over 27 acres and offer beautiful views of Parliament from every angle.

There is a visitor center on the 1st floor and an observation deck on the 27th floor, but pets are not allowed inside the building. However, if you want to admire the decorations and accessories of the Capitol, there are plenty of shaded seats for you and your pets to enjoy. We decided to spend all our time exploring the outdoors and there was so much to see.

Pets on leashes are allowed inside the Capitol and on the grounds, but not inside the building.

The Grand Staircase leads to the Capitol, and each of the 48 steps is marked in the order of the states that joined the Union. (There were only 48 states when construction was completed; Alaska and Hawaii shared the top rank and were added when they achieved statehood.)

In 1935, just three years after the Capitol was completed, then-Senator Long was assassinated outside the governor’s office on the first floor. He is buried in the middle of the garden and his grave has a similar monument facing the building he loved.

The land currently occupied by Parliament has its own history. The site provided access to the lower Mississippi, and evidence that the area was a strategic military location is still visible. West of the Capitol, the Pentagon was built between 1819 and 1824 and was designed to house more than 1,000 soldiers. These now serve as the lieutenant governor’s office and the private residences of the state legislature.

To the east is Arsenal Park, where a warehouse built in 1838 to store gunpowder still stands. There is also a cannon, placed on a ceremonial site built by Native Americans 1,000 years ago.

Behind the Capitol is Capitol Lake, and another boardwalk follows part of the beach. Pigeons play in the sun and ducks tend their nests, all at the feet of the most influential event in the region.

This is the perfect place to grab a book and a blanket, take a walk and spend the afternoon by the lake. But remember, you’re only a few blocks from the Mississippi River, so a walk to the Riverfront Plaza is a must. The yachts are constantly coming and going, and the boats are like worker bees that manage the big cargo ships.

If you’re feeling down or need a drink, check out Capital City Grill Downtown (100 Lafayette Street). The patio seating area is next to the fountain, creating a nice atmosphere and the kids will be happy to join you. The table was wide enough to stretch a large dog, which Buster really enjoyed.

For Bernedoodle Sally, the highlight of 2020 has to be a month-long road trip she’s been looking forward to in the car. She knows that road trips mean countless cows barking along the way, eating lots of good food, and lots of sleep cuddling mom and dad in bed. Sally is really happy all the time, but she is happiest when she is active outside. Two trips to the North Shore of Louisiana made her an expert on what to do and show her canine friends.

As for where you are, that depends on what you (your parents) prefer. If you want to experience the North Shore with your child, Sally is a big fan of Trace B&B. Located in the heart of Old Mandeville, just one block from downtown shopping and Tammany Trace. Other dog-friendly options include Farmers Splendor B&B, Best Western Covington and Residence Inn Covington. If you want to stay at Fontainebleau State Park, you have the option of camping or staying in a pet-free room. Next time you will find us there.

If you’re looking for some family time, aside from the pup, consider leaving your baby at PetSuites North Shore. On this last trip, we sent Sally to Pet Sweets for a few days and it was definitely the highlight of her road trip. Not only did she get to run and play with the dogs (and people) all day, but she also had her own room with a comfy bed and Animal Planet playing on TV all night. How messed up!

What Sally likes about the North Shore is that there are so many things to do. Some days we have a hard time working out the “swings” at home, but it’s easy to put her to bed as soon as we get back to the hotel after a day here. Here are some of her favorite ways to spend the day.

Ultimate Dog-friendly Texas Road Trip

Given the amount of time you spend with your child on the North Shore, you might be ready for some delicious food. Fortunately, there are plenty of dog-friendly options.

Overall, the Louisiana North Shore is a great place for those traveling with dogs. Since her first visit in 2019, she is “Sally Approved”. There is still much to explore in Surrey. Your dog has been very active lately. Maybe he or she is actually digging on the beach and ready for you to pack a bowl. Well done and leading a fun holiday. Whether you’re running your dog in the lake or walking along the Gulf of Mexico with your kids, all but one of Louisiana’s public beaches require dogs to be on leads. Your dog will love barking in the ocean, safely sniffing for washed-up sea life, and wading through the sand to find hidden treasures. Don’t forget to bring your dog’s supplies, water bottles and beach toys. Find dog-friendly Louisiana vacation rentals within 32 miles of these dog-friendly beaches. Most of them are located in sparsely populated areas.

One hour south of Lake Charles and one hour east of Holly Beach, the nearly deserted Rutherford Beach offers dogs the freedom to chase the waves, roll in the sand and watch the birds. Release Faith and watch your furry pup explode with joy. It’s a great place to look for shells, swim, surf, enjoy a fire or drive along the beach. Dip your toes in the sand, have a cup of sweet tea in hand, relax and enjoy a hearty meal using the BBQ grill. Beach amenities include showers, porters and trash cans, making your stay convenient and enjoyable year-round. T-Boys Cajun Grill de Creole serves burgers, catfish, frog legs, okra gumbo and seafood in a casual setting. For a change of pace, drive 22 miles to Cameron and take the ferry to Holly Beach.
