Jurassic Coast Durdle Door

If your dog needs a checkup while visiting the Jurassic Coast, there are many veterinarians in the area who can provide emergency appointments. There are many beautiful places to stay on holiday with your dog within a few hours of London. Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is a great destination if beautiful beaches, seaside resorts and countryside walks are on your to-do list, making it ideal for dogs all year round. Last summer we decided to take a two day trip from London to see Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, taking the dog Argo with us. In this article, we’ll tell you about the area, give you some tips on what to do with your dog (and what to avoid), and help you plan a trip to the Jurassic Coast and your four-legged friend.

If you google “Durdle Door” and “Lulworth Cove” you will find beautiful pictures of Mediterranean landscapes that seem far away from London. However, Lulworth Cove (near Durdle Gate) is a 2 and a half hour train journey from London Waterloo, and a 20/25 minute bus journey, and a 3 hour car journey from the city. .

To our surprise, we discovered that Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are dog-friendly beaches all year round (!), making them great and popular places for dog owners. What we didn’t know, (although we must be wrong), is that the place will attract huge crowds, especially during August and bank holidays – the time we chose for our visit. There will be some logistical issues that should not be anticipated, but you can have a strategy to visit the Jurassic Coast in all its glory (more on that here).

Dog Friendly Holidays Jurassic Coast

Not only is there Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door to see in the area, but there are many other activities and dog-friendly things to do, which we will tell you about in this blog. But let’s start with two “must see”.

Beach Holiday Cottages In West Lulworth

Lulworth Cove occupies the small village of West Lulworth, lined with charming thatched cottages and numerous ice cream shops. The clear color of the water and land at Lulworth Cove is unlike any other UK beach we’ve seen (except Cornwall). Pebble Beach, surrounded by volcanic hills and shaped like a pyramid, reminded me of the beaches of Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. If you come early in the morning you will see less people, don’t worry about disturbing the neighbors, enjoy swimming and playing with your dog.

Access to a great beach at Lulworth Cove (the steep path and many steps to Durdle Door is nothing to sneeze at). From West Lulworth a small path gently descends to the beach and a few steps down you will see Pebbles Beach. There is a very small dog-free zone on the west side of the beach, but dogs are welcome on the rest (on the main beach).

On the other side of the western bay is a small rock pool surrounded by Lulworth Crumple, which takes its name from the beautiful rocks that can be seen around.

A steep descent will take you to the sea, where you will meet people paddling and climbing. We have verified that there are no companies offering dog friendly kayaks/SUP in the area. Now, but it’s a lot of fun.

If you look closely enough and have a vantage point for a spectacular view, you will find fossils in the rocks.

There is a path that goes up from Lulworth Cove that takes you to Durdle Gate (the path goes up and down and takes about 35-40 minutes if you like it can take longer). The descent to Durdle Gate is steep, so good walking shoes are recommended (don’t ski at all costs!) It’s quite challenging for those with mobility issues and dogs.

The Durdle Door is excellent. But don’t be fooled by the silly pictures that show you a lost paradise: its charm will make the place famous. When we visited the place in August, it seemed like the arrival of people, there were people fighting to sit on the beach, the river was dark like a swarm of ants crossing the road, and lines to take pictures at the best spots. . I have to think that the pictures we found online might have been taken in the winter! My husband rejected this comment and was very unhappy. I always appreciate the venue, but I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t say the crowd was great. We both agreed that the worst part was having to wait an hour and a half for the bus from Wool railway station to Lulworth Cove, and almost two hours at Durdle Door to return – bad times for a while. It was a short trip like ours.

For some dogs, this is a great place to check out other dog-friendly activities you can do near Durdle Gate and Lulworth Cove. , along the Jurassic coast.

Jurassic Coast Landmarks

After visiting the two popular spots mentioned above, there are other things for your dog to do along the Jurassic Coast – the peninsula where Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove – are located. We look at dog friendly activities to do within a 35 minute/half hour drive by Public transport from West Lulworth.

From Lulworth Cove you can take a 7 mile (11.3 km) circular walk, which will take you to Durdle Door and White Noth. This is a challenging walk, so make sure you have good legs and breath. Maps are also available
