Boat Trips With Dogs Near Me – It’s a fun day out for people and dogs alike as six people, four dogs and a pack of dogs take a week-long Grand Tour of the Thames on a self-propelled electric boat! That’s exactly what happened when we were invited to try Go Boat Kingston, the latest in Go Boat London’s dog-friendly boating experience.
You may remember that we had an amazing time at the dog friendly Go Boat experience on Regent’s Canal last summer, so on a dark Sunday afternoon Belinha, Lilliput, Cloud and Orly were excited to try out the Go Boat with the people. A new location in Kingston upon Thames.

Since first launching in Copenhagen in 2017 and then coming to London in Paddington, a ride on one of Go-Boat’s self-driving electric boats should be on your ‘London To Do List’. Like Go Boat Paddington, the Go Boat Kingston experience offers the opportunity to charter your own boat, but this time it’s a different experience… Cruising along the Thames, the idea is fun and a little scary!
Cruising the Thames is completely different to cruising the Regent’s Channel, especially if you are a new captain! Contrary to what I thought, it is easier to captain a go-boat on the Thames than along the Regent’s Canal, according to those who have taken both trips. This is mainly because you have less clearance in the channel, so you may not be heading in the right direction until the boat finds its position!
Thames has more space, so everything is easier. Of course there are other boats on the river with you, some of them big boats, but if you stand on one side and follow the instructions of the Go Boat crew, there is plenty of room for everyone to move. There is nothing.
At first we put the captains on Lilliput and Cloud, but soon we had to hand over the co-ordinator to our respective captains – Cloud’s father Ian (guilty – of course, we didn’t have dogs driving the boat, but they are very nice captains ., figuratively speaking).

For the Go Boat Kingston experience you have two options, one at Molesley Lock, Hampton Court and the other at Teddington Lock, here is a map.
We had a two-hour boat experience, plenty of time to do one of these routes, so we decided to go to Hampton Court. Surprisingly, even though it took about an hour each way, the time flew by.
Everyone brought picnic material and was definitely recommended to complete the time. Alcoholic beverages are permitted as long as you adhere to the following limits – two bottles/cans of standard strength beer, bulk or pre-mixed spirits per person or one 750ml wine/champagne/prosecco between 2 people. Of course, boaters should remain sober and stick to alcohol-free options throughout the trip.
Finally we have enough food and drink to last us a few days! The dogs couldn’t believe all the goodness at the puppies’ picnic that Lilliput’s mother made and the Snuffle Dog beer was the biggest hit.

After passing Ditton Island in the Thames and finding some stunningly beautiful houses along the way, we arrived at Hampton Court. Spectacular views of the Golden Gate and Hampton Court make this trip worth choosing from our unique perspective.
Before long we reached Hampton Court Bridge and it was time to head back for one last chance to complete the pickup!
Of course! Everyone had a great afternoon doing something different with our dogs and agreed it was a really great experience for those who haven’t been on a dog friendly go boat before.
Those who have experienced the Go Boat on Regent’s Canal are also big fans, saying the experience is different enough that you won’t feel like you’re doing the same thing twice. The two have different opinions on their favorite experiences for different reasons – cruising the open waters of the Thames is a winner for some, while the Regent’s Canal is a highlight for others. Either way, there is a benefit to both experiences.

Our number one priority for dog-friendly Go Boat London experiences is to bring your dog something to sit on. Since the surface of the boats is quite shiny, it can be a bit uncomfortable and slippery for dogs. Belinha is really uncomfortable with slippery surfaces, so this time I bought a non-slip dog bed, even the carpet she was sitting on was slippery.
Another best option is to bring a photo, but not too many. Don’t forget to have special treats in the picnic enclosure for the pups, because the experience is all about them. Also, if your pup is an avid sailor, a puppy or some chicks will help them get into the sailing spirit.
None of the dogs on board are swimmers (quite the opposite, in fact), but if your dog is partial to swimming, it’s wise to invest in a reasonably priced dog coat on Amazon. Sticking to them is very different from the sinking Regent’s Canal, which takes a sudden plunge into the Thames. Claude had brought gloves.
Go Boats allow up to eight passengers on board, and those passengers can be humans or puppies. However, if your child is a small dog that can sit on your lap (the guidelines state that it must weigh less than a 2-year-old child), they do not count towards the passenger limit.

We took the Go Boat Kingston experience for two hours, which was just enough time to get to Hampton Court and back. However, if doing this for the first time I would recommend booking the three hour trip as it gives you time to take in both Teddington Locks and Hampton Court.
If you’ve ever been to Go Boat in Paddington, you’ll know that it’s easy to spot because all the boats are lined up at the dock, so that’s what we were looking for when we arrived in Kingston. However, the entrance to Go Boat Kingston is almost hidden, on the Kingston river promenade opposite Cote Brasserie and the River Hache social area – in fact you can walk past it if you’re not looking.

By train: The train from Waterloo to Kingston takes 30 minutes, then approx. 10 minute drive to Go Boat Kingston
