Dog Friendly Hikes On The Olympic Peninsula
Don’t go hunting. Please stick to the Rovers and licks you are used to. Just kidding – sweat it out (after a heavy downpour) at this beautiful (and free) State Park! Less than 100 miles outside of Chicago, Starved Rock has 18 canyons, beautiful limestone cliffs, a recreational park and garden with four welcoming patios, and a rich cultural history. The deck is best for high back roads for spectacular views.
From local shops to beautiful parks and trails, there are plenty of pet-friendly things to do in Northern Indiana’s Amish Country. Try Shipshewana’s Flea Market, which welcomes young professionals to explore the Midwest’s largest flea market near you. Just a word of warning: after a weekend of learning about Amish life, it can be difficult to return to the hustle and bustle of the city.
Wisconsin is the perfect place to take lots of “cheesy” photo opportunities with your dog! Many restaurants allow dogs on their terraces, and many bed and breakfasts welcome them. This tourist town caters as much to children as to people, so you can relax and rejuvenate together. If you’re feeling less R&R and more outdoorsy, take a stroll through Big Foot Beach State Park along Lake Geneva.
There’s a Pupper for beer, and there’s no better place than Milwaukee. So pet-friendly, it might be hard to convince Fido to come back to Chicago with you. The Superior Trail (SHT) is 310 miles from the Minnesota-Wisconsin border south of Duluth to its northern end near the Canadian border. Much of the trail parallels Minnesota’s North Shore, treating hikers to rocky ridges, views of Lake Superior, cascading waterfalls and many patches of rugged forest.
Dogs are allowed on all 310 miles of this trail as long as they are on a leash. And all the campsites are booked so you don’t have to plan your trip to visit SHT months in advance. Just choose a good time of year and turn up!
But even though the campsites are free, make sure you don’t leave anything behind and be a good steward of the trail. And if you love the trail as much as I do, consider donating to the Association for Superior Hiking Trails.
While SHT holds a large part of my heart, the Porcupine Mountains are another beautiful example in the upper Midwest. Just a few hours from my home state of Minnesota are the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Car Travel With Dogs: Does Your Dog Deserve A Road Trip?
The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness is Michigan’s largest state park. Located on the Upper Peninsula, the park includes 60,000 acres of forests, lakes and rivers on the shores of Lake Superior. The Porcupine Mountains form a 12-mile stretch of Lake Superior for a distance of 2.5 miles. On a clear day you can see 25 miles west of the ridge.
The park has 90 miles of hiking trails, 2 established campgrounds, several backpacking campsites, and some backcountry cabins (the cabins are not dog friendly). In addition to the houses and parks, the park accepts pets. However, like most parks in the Midwest, dogs must be kept on a 6-foot leash and cannot be left unattended.
Backpacking Porcupine Mountain costs $20 per night for groups of 1 to 6 people. Group size is limited to no more than 6 people. Permits are issued on arrival at the park at the visitor centre. Reservations are available up to six months in advance and up to 72 hours prior to arrival at midnrreservations.com or 1-800-44PARKS. For the rest of the year, from 15 October to 14 May, motorhomes must check in at the park centre.
The Border Trail (BRT) is a 65-mile trail in northeastern Minnesota. A beautiful, remote trail that follows the Canadian border in the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area (BWCA). The eastern end of this trail is just outside the BWCA and connects to the Superior Walking Trail (SHT). At the BRT West Terminal, you can connect to the Kekekabić route and continue walking to the western half of the BWCA.

Dogs are allowed on this entire trail. It does not have to be tied, but must be checked at all times. There is a lot of wildlife, including moose and bears, on the Neighborhood Trail. As a result, it is very important for the safety of everyone (you, your dog, the animals and other visitors) that your dog stays with you, comes when called and does not disturb animals or other visitors.
You need a permit to stay overnight in the BWCA from May to September. The license cost $38 when this blog post was written. Prices may change in the future. This permit system helps support the National Forest Service (the organization that manages the BWCA). It also helps limit the number of people using the trail, keeping it rugged, remote and wild. Permits can be found at Recreation.gov.
