Dog Friendly Travel Guide – I like to travel with dogs. For me, driving is the easiest and most comfortable way to visit many places with my pup. Louie and I have taken several long trips to Europe with the dogs, but our experience in the US is limited. Everything will change.
Louie and I will be spending most of March on an epic trip to California! Starting in the San Francisco Bay Area, we’ll go through Napa Valley to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. After a few days in Mendocino County, we begin driving south on California State Route 1. I hope to follow the famous coastal road all the way to San Diego.

Our trip to California will take Louie and I along the Pacific to Jenner, Santa Cruz, and Cambria. There will be time for extended stays (and laundry) in the cities of Carmel, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Laguna Beach where the dogs are kept. Or at least that’s the plan for now.
One of the benefits of traveling with dogs is that you have the freedom to be spontaneous. You can stop if necessary and explore places that look interesting along the way. Owning a car also gives puppies a safe and familiar place to relax.
I always use the back seat cover when I go on road trips with Louie. The cradle protects the interior of the car and the dog especially well. It also uses a special safety harness for dog harnesses. Bringing a familiar blanket from home makes the back seat even more comfortable.

If you and your dog want to explore a ghost town, you’re in luck. Ouray has many ghost towns to visit.
One of the easiest to get to (with lots of buildings to see) is Ironton. Located between Silverton and Ouray, this ghost town is a fun visit for history and nature lovers. Ironton is part of the Red Mountain Mining District, which includes several towns on both sides of Red Mountain Pass. It became an important transportation center between Ouray and the mining fields of the Red Mountain District, but as time passed and mining slowed, the town was abandoned. Today, the city receives many visitors from curious travelers (and their four-legged friends).

Take your pet to cool off in the river at the Ridgway Off-Leash Dog Swimming Pool in Ridgway. It’s perfect for hot summer days when it’s too hot to do anything else. You’ll find this open space for you and your pup just north of the library on North Railroad Street. Please note that it is not fenced, so dogs must be under voice control at all times. Bring a leash, trash bags, and some food (for you and your pet) and enjoy a great day by the Uncompahgre River!

If you’re one of the more than 3 million people who adopted a puppy in 2020, you’re probably wondering what it’s like to travel with a dog. At least I am. I have tons of questions about the logistics of traveling with a dog, and after having the opportunity to go on some big trips with my pup last year, I’ve picked up a few tricks to share here. Here’s my guide to finding dog-friendly accommodation, and I’ll cover other aspects of traveling with a dog in future posts.
While your accommodation options will be more limited when traveling with a dog, you will still have the same types of accommodation available. Most of these include hotels and Airbnb/Vrbo.
Yes! A 2016 survey by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) found that 75% of hotels in the United States allow dogs. However, there are some caveats. Some hotels only allow smaller dogs under a certain weight, some only allow certain breeds, and almost all charge an additional cleaning fee for bringing a pet. Some hotels may also have rules about not leaving your dog on the furniture or leaving it unattended in the room. If a hotel does not have specific weight, size and breed requirements listed on their website, it is always a good idea to send the hotel a message confirming that your particular pet is allowed before you check in.
Contrary to what many may think, there is not much difference between luxury, mid-range and budget hotels when it comes to pets. This means that no matter what type of traveler you are, you can find a hotel that allows you to bring your dog. An easy way to find pet friendly hotels is to go to a website like booking.com and apply the “pet friendly” filter.

Many hotel chains from cheap options like Motel 6 to luxury options like the Ritz Carlton allow dogs. Some chains allow dogs across the board without restrictions, others allow dogs in some of their properties, and still others have weight, size and breed restrictions.
