Dog Friendly Alexandria Va – Named one of the most dog-friendly cities in the United States, Alexandria, VA did not disappoint. We spent most of our time in the Old Town, a charming and walkable area full of museums, restaurants and great shops. There were dog crates on King Street and dogs on every corner, Charlie couldn’t help but feel at home. There’s also a free trolley that runs along King Street, a mile walk (or walk…) through the Old Town, home to 200 independent restaurants and boutiques.

There are 18 public dog parks in Alexandria (including several private dog parks) and while I haven’t visited them all, Founders Park is highly recommended and is located on the harbor/water of Alexandria (a must see). With a waterfront view of the Potomac, it’s a great place to take a walk with your child or take a walk on the lawn. You can book a boat trip with the Potomac Riverboat Company, which offers a variety of tours, including a 60-minute dog cruise for dogs on select days from May through September. If you’re in the mood for a walk in the park, the Community Fair and Windmill Hill Park are recommended.

A former World War II munitions factory next to Alexandria’s harbor now serves as a studio for 82 artists. From oil paintings, ceramics to jewelry, this is a great showcase of local art galleries with work for sale and dogs of all sizes are welcome! I personally love creative spaces like this and think they bring a lot of energy to the communities they are a part of. Especially if they are open to the public (including dogs) and admission is free.
All things with poison and dragon’s blood in a jar from the late 1700s are worth seeing. It is located in the old town, one block from the visitor center. It is a full family medical store and manufacturing business that operated from 1792-1933. Even the contents of the box are original!
Carlyle House is a historic mansion owned by wealthy businessman John Carlyle. Explore John Carlyle’s 1753 home at the heart of Alexandria’s 18th-century social and political scene. It was the water’s edge, but we know that the land near the water filled and expanded several blocks earlier. In addition, we learned that many children did not seem to be mature at that time.

Located at 480 King Street in Old Town, just down the street from the Visitor Center and Shopping Square, the location couldn’t be more important! This charming boutique hotel is colorful with interesting decor and comfortable rooms. Named after the city’s founders, John and Philip Alexander, the lobby welcomes you with turquoise velvet sofas and a complimentary tea and coffee station throughout the day. The best part is that it’s so pet friendly, most of you dog owners know that this can mean an extra $100-$150, but Alexandrine only charges an extra $25 to bring your fur baby!
We were only in the city for 2 days, although I admit there is a lot to explore outside of the old city. There were so many attractions, restaurants and shopping in the old town that I didn’t want to waste my time, but two were worth a visit:
Visit the George Washington House, 8 miles from Old Town. It’s easy to get around by car, boat or bike. Dogs are welcome at the home (not indoor only), which explores the life of the first presidential dog on select Saturdays at 10 a.m. April-June and September-October. to the dog . Who lives in the house today? Admission to the property is $20 (40% off with a City Museum Key ticket, plus $7 per person).
About 10 minutes from Old Town, directly across from the Alexandria Amtrak station, this landmark dates back to 1922 and is now an active Masonic Temple and memorial museum with a large observation deck.
