On the south coast, between East Sussex on one side and Hampshire on the other, West Sussex is one of London’s most accessible coastal areas, with many beaches that are dog-friendly all year round, even in summer. This means you can enjoy a day at the beach with your dog whenever you want, less than two hours from London.
At many of the beaches we visited, you could imagine you were abroad because the beach was sparkling in the sun against the clear blue sky and blue sea! The beaches in West Sussex are usually rocky shores, but when the tide goes down there are miles of compact sand waiting for children to play on. And let’s be honest, from a dog’s point of view, they probably don’t care if the tide is in or out – they’re just happy to be on an adventure that includes the sea with their human!

We’ve been busy checking out lots of Sussex beaches (someone’s got to do that) and when making this list we took a few factors into consideration… the beach itself, any dog restrictions, how easy it was to get to from London. and any dog-friendly facilities nearby. Even if there are dog-friendly areas on the beach, always remember to bring water for your dog to keep him hydrated and even a cooling jacket or scarf if you think he might need one.
So here are some of our favorite dog friendly beaches in West Sussex and the key information you need to know to make the most of your dog’s day at the beach.
Top tip: When planning your day at the beach, don’t forget to check the tide times, which you can do on this website – if your pup isn’t used to the sea yet, it’s best to visit at low tide. Rest assured, whether you’re traveling at high tide or high tide and the beach is rocky or sandy, you’ll feel invincible when you’re “by the sea”…with your dog, of course.
Littlehampton West Beach is one of the few places you’ll find sandy beaches in West Sussex (our best so far was at the dog-friendly Camber Sands in East Sussex). Adjacent to the River Arun, the west coast stretches for miles to reach Klimping (more details below). Littlehampton actually has two beaches – East and West, on either side of the river. East Beach is reserved for swimmers in the summer, which is only fair because dogs also have a beach reserved for them at West Beach. You can reach the beach either by walking past the West Beach Cafe or by taking the wooden walkway across the sand behind the cafe (our choice).
5 Dog Friendly Beaches In Malta And Gozo
Maybe not as famous as some others, but a great beach to visit with your dog thanks to the wide beach, the cool wooden Perch beach cafe in Lansing Beach and the large green area behind the beach for the dogs to run. The Perch features pet dog Harry, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for people and dogs, and a varied lunch or dinner menu (dinner available in summer).
Another spacious dog friendly beach with a very popular dog cafe that we specifically came to check out… Bluebird Cafe. The cafe has a real beach vibe, is colorful throughout and welcomes people and dogs alike. You’ll also find a lovely row of colorful beach huts a little further down the sand – not quite the caliber of the West Wittering Beach Huts, but great for photos.
It’s the fastest coast to reach from London by train and like all of its West Sussex counterparts, it offers miles of pebbly beach that’s dog-friendly all year round. However, after the beach we are always looking for a dog friendly cafe and since there is nowhere right on the beach we recommend taking the train one stop to Lansing Beach, see #2 above.
Klimping Beach is the beach to go to if you want to get away from it all. It feels peaceful and secluded, even though it’s the next beach next to Littlehampton’s West Beach, which you can walk to in an hour (just remember if you’ve left your car at Climping, you’ll have to walk back too). We had it to ourselves apart from a few other swimmers and dog walkers, so it’s a good beach if your dog needs some space.

The dogs even have their own ‘dog friendly car park’ when you arrive which we think is brilliant! Actually, this is because the parking and beach area on the left as you enter is where the dogs can be in the front, and the parking and beach area on the right is where the dogs must be in the front. There is plenty of parking and a small cafe in a shipping container outside the grounds.
As far as West Sussex’s dog-friendly beaches go, West Wittering Beach is the dog-friendly equivalent of Camber West Sussex, although it’s the furthest from London in this guide and the hardest to reach by public transport. But in summer, dogs are not allowed between groynes 14a and 18, where there are beautiful beach huts. East Cape Beach still has plenty of room for dogs all year round, just a short walk from the beach hut and around the corner. However, the beach is usually very busy on a hot summer day, so it might be something to do on a summer weekday or late summer.

Palm Bay Beach will be the closest dog beach to Margate if you want to combine a visit to both. When we first arrived at Palm Bay, it wasn’t immediately clear how to get down to the beach from the boardwalk, but once you find your way through the cliffs, the beach is all yours. There is plenty of sand on the beach to sniff or if we saw a lucky sheep, to go up and down.

Street parking is free and there’s a dog-friendly Jet Ski Cafe on the beach.
About a ten minute walk along the coast between Margate and Broadstairs you will find Kingsgate Bay, famous for its white limestone cliffs, sea cave and home to the Kingsgate Bay Sea Belt. The water was still very high when we visited, so we couldn’t go through the arch, but it was still a beautiful beach worth visiting.
Unfortunately there is no parking at Kingsgate Bay and access to the beach is more than a pinch and you miss it. The only immediate parking is at the Captain Digby’s pub (dogs are only allowed in the beer garden). Apparently, if you don’t eat, it will make you lose 20 pounds
