Juno loved running in the large impenetrable garden and we enjoyed the sunset over the Donegal country from the Hottub. This cottage has stunning views of the Skerries Islands. The former home of American artist Frank Russell, with an adjacent art studio and cottage (perfect for large parties), has recently been lovingly restored by new owner Julie. Named after the nearby lake, Lachrandota is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the stunning beauty of West Cork. The undulating sea views from the artist’s studio above Dunmans Bay on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula amidst the unspoilt scenery of the south west coast are breathtaking. Both properties are dog friendly and the garden is a lovely place for dogs. Note that most walks in this part of Ireland, including the Sheep’s Head Way and the nearby Bear Way, are off limits to dogs. Having said that, we put Juno on a leash and told the locals that the dogs should not disturb the local sheep, no problem.

For three days we visited the Causeway Coast in Reed, parking each evening on beautiful beaches to enjoy the stars and wake up to the sounds of the sea before sunrise. The van has most of the things you need for your adventure, including a toilet, all you need to do is pack your dog and a bed. You pick up the van from Cathal’s lovely traditional cottage in Waterfoot, Co Antrim, where we were treated to chard and spinach from the garden. Cathal and his partner Jules are so warm and welcoming that you will want to invite them on your trip!
There is something romantic and extremely adventurous about sailing across the Atlantic. Waiting for the Clare Island ferry is simply an unforgettable experience as the sheep flock to the top of the pier after the trip from the island. Humphrey, on the other hand, awaits your arrival at the dock to take you to the lighthouse at the northern tip of the island.
