[Editor’s note: This post was originally written on the blog of a great retailer. After months of waiting for the article to come out, I had to download it. I realized that many of the articles on their site featured places, experiences and products that the authors had not tested on their dogs. When the site asked me to post a New York City activity with Lucy that I hadn’t done before, I felt bad.

Dog-friendly Road Trip From Ohio To Maine. Bucket List Trip
Exploring all the places we’ve been to can be so much fun! You can take a dog-friendly subway, or take a taxi or a ride-sharing service like Via or Uber that allows large dogs. You have to ask the driver if it’s okay with your dog in the car before you get in, but everyone is welcome! So, if you’re thinking of taking your dog to New York, it’s easy to do. It’s all new to me, but what we love is that they usually send a large 10-passenger van so there’s plenty of room for a big dog like Lucy.
Of course NYC is also very walkable! Just be aware of the heat and amount of exercise your dog can tolerate. You should check the temperature of the pavement yourself with your bare feet. If you can’t handle it in 7 seconds, your dog is too hot and you should jump out of the car.
One of the best things about traveling with your dog is discovering dog friendly hotels and their dog friendly amenities. You can find dog friendly hotels on websites like www.petswelcome.com, there are many options. Lucy sure loves jumping into a king bed at the Rivington Hotel (our friends at WT Frenchie were there the week we were in town). The hotel accepts a maximum of two dogs per room, so this is a great option if you’re traveling with a small group! The best thing about this hotel is that it’s just steps away from one of our dog friendly bars in town! D.B.A. East Village welcomes dogs in the bar and yard. Be prepared to get a lot of attention from other dog-loving customers as you enjoy beer in a variety of ways.
New York Hikes
Next time we are in NYC, Lucy and I want to visit the Soho Grand Hotel, WT French was there too! It has petting zoos and a custom dog park designed by garden designer Rebecca Cole, a favorite of Oprah. This hotel takes care of your child’s stay by providing organic food, bedding, food and water, and bags. The best part? No animal fees!
Another option if you’re visiting the Big Apple with your dog is to do what we did and head to Brooklyn, where you can choose from dog-friendly hotels. Lucy and I stayed at the Hotel, a short walk from Prospect Park. The room was very small but had great floors, complete with a dog bed!
One of the highlights of our trip was the jump rope hours around Prospect Park from 5:00am – 9:00pm and 9:00am – 1:00pm. Dogs of all shapes and sizes chill in the grass for about a mile. There’s even a dog beach in the park if your pup wants to go swimming! Lucy wants to be beautiful so there is no beach for her!
This reminds me that, as much as we all love our dogs, it’s no secret that lawnmower dog urine can be a serious problem. Especially if you want to keep the garden well-kept and the grass lush! Innside New York Nomad
Eating with your dog in NYC is easy during the summer. Many areas have street cafes. A great restaurant to take your dog to is Bluestone Lane on the Upper East Side, located across from one of the main park entrances. Lucy and I went there with our pack and asked for a table for 5 girls and 7 dogs, unfortunately they booked us!
Like Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Central Park welcomes dogs from 5:00 am – 9:00 pm and 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. After enjoying one of the country’s most famous parks (and taking pictures with Natalie Seibers), we crossed over to Bluestone Lane for the famous avocado toast and filling up on countless dog juices. The street location of this cafe has lots of grass and is on a wide street so dogs have plenty of shade and a private space to enjoy their visit.

A dog trip to New York City wouldn’t be complete without some great photos. One of the best places to take photos of your dog in the city is along the Brooklyn Promenade. Plan your visit in the evening and you’ll be able to get some great photos of you and your dog in front of the Manhattan skyline at sunset.

We started under the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO, where we saw many tourists taking pictures on the beautiful cobblestone streets. From there, we went through Brooklyn Bridge Park, which has a nice carousel and lots of ice cream shops. Continue south along the water for a great view of the skyline. The Pier 6 Dog Run happens after your trip when your pup needs another chance to stretch his legs on a leash before the evening is over.
You need a few essentials for your dog vacation in the city. Pack at least one collapsible bowl and take it anywhere. It’s easy to fill up on water at the market or street cafe.
You may also want to bring home dog food. Pack for a few days in something like the Kibble Carrier from Kurgo that can hold 5 pounds of food. Lucy’s back is full of Staw & Chewy’s Raw Mix!
Another thing you may want to bring on your trip is a pair of shoes. Paved roads can be hot in the summer, salty in the winter, and dirt roads. I’ve used Pawz before. It’s easy to use and disposable, so you can throw it away after your trip and use a new tool for your next project.
