One of my childhood memories was visiting the historic town of Echuca on the mighty Murray River and going on a rowboat. I managed to go back in 2021, between lockdowns, and got my dog back.
Most Echuca cruise lines allow well-behaved dogs on board as long as they do not enter the floating restaurant. For example, Echuca Paddlesteamers run several hours a day on the historic PS Pevensey and PS Alexander Arbuthnot, and welcome pets on board. Be sure to keep your baby close to the whistle!

While in Beechworth, it’s worth following the Gorge Scenic Drive through Beechworth Heritage Park to the north of the town. It can be carried or you can walk all or part of the ground with your dog. Secure them with a belt.
Many resorts in Australia do not allow dogs due to park availability or other restrictions. But Dinner Plain is different in the Victorian world, meaning you can help your dog with snowshoes in the winter months. This resort has slopes that are perfect for beginners or those who love pride or fun.

While Melbourne may have many trams on its city streets, did you know there is an old tram in Bendigo? It’s a great way to get to know the old town, especially since well-behaved dogs get on the tram.

Bright is a popular place, including with dog owners. This small town in the High Country has plenty of trails for dogs to explore. Alternatively, consider cycling with your dog.
There are many cycle routes close to Bright, including the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail which starts nearby. And if you don’t have your own bike, there are many bike shops in town. At least one, Electric Bikes, offers dog trailers for rent, though other shops may have them if you ask directly. Also check any weight restrictions.

The Wandiligong Bypass, 5.5km from Bright and home to the Nightingale Bros Apple Orchard, is a popular route for inexperienced cyclists. Afterwards, enjoy a swim in the River Ovens or a local beer at Bright Brewery.
There are many places in Victoria to see koalas in the wild, but one of the best is Raymond Island in East Gippsland, near the entrance to the Lakes.
To get to Raymond Island, I recommend parking in Paynesville and taking the short free pedestrian train across. The Koala Trail starts opposite the boat, and it’s best to walk to see all the koalas.
The main route is 1.2 km long, although there are longer routes. To support local volunteers, consider purchasing a brochure to get started or donating to the website. Be sure to keep your dog on a leash at all times, even if your dog is like ours, he may not know what’s sleeping in the gum tree!

Paddles aren’t the only popular way to get dogs around in Victoria, dog boats are available. Closer to Melbourne you can catch a vintage train on the Victorian Goldfields Railway, which connects the gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon.
When choosing your carriage, be sure to select “Tsingo Class” (first class carriages only allow service dogs). The Excursion Group has an old wooden carriage with a family room with open windows, perfect for an authentic experience. Dogs are free, but please make sure they are well behaved, dog permits at the discretion of the Main Station.
If you want to enjoy the whole day, book the Wednesday train or the Sunday morning train. The first is 2 1/2 hours in the old gold mining town of Maldon, the second includes a 90-minute stop (Sunday afternoon tours have a short stop.) For a dog-friendly lunch, visit the Maldon Hotel and dine at an outside table at a local brewery or restaurant.

Maldon isn’t the only gold mining town in Victoria where you can ride your dog on an old train. For a popular dog walk, head to Walhalla, 2.5 hours from Melbourne. But the train (diesel this time) isn’t the only attraction for dogs in Walhalla…
For something completely different, check out the Long Range Gold Mine. One of Victoria’s most productive gold mines, today you can take a 50-minute drive along the main road, see how the original gold mines worked and hear lots of interesting stories from your guide.
It was dark and sometimes wet inside the tunnel, so I took my little dog for a walk. Decide in advance if you think your dog will be well behaved and fit into the trip. Professional booking is recommended due to group size limitations.
There is much to see in Walhalla, including seeing the city from below and reading over 30 signs that tell its story. Leashed dogs are also welcome on the tramway to the Long Gold Mine Tunnel.

If you are thinking of driving down Ocean Road with your dog, I will warn you in advance that it is not dog friendly. Many famous places on the road, such as the area where the 12 Apostles are seen, are forbidden to dogs. Also, many beaches prohibit dogs during the summer months.
However, there are many things to do with your dog, and a trip with your child can be short or long, especially if you are prepared. I recommend you read my guide in advance to find out what is and isn’t dog friendly and book your accommodation in advance. If possible, visit during the spring months or other winter months of the year, when most beaches allow dogs on the sand.
