It usually takes 8 hours non-stop to travel from Melbourne to South Australia. Since we were traveling with two adorable poodles, Ollie and Winx, the trip took about 10 hours. When traveling with dogs, you need to take short breaks every few hours. We did this trip over the Easter weekend of 2023, which was only four days long. This route is therefore ideal for those planning a short trip to Adelaide and its surrounding areas.

Reservations for pets are required in advance, as their number is limited. Even then we couldn’t find suitable accommodation for the dogs as we were traveling on a busy holiday. So we broadened our search to places that weren’t suitable for dogs but had potential (like properties with a secure fenced yard). We then contacted the owner by sending a friendly note describing our dogs as hypoallergenic, non-shedding and well behaved (submitting our Instagram always helps!).

A Guide To Pet-friendly Vacations In Every State

The wonderful host Iluk at Aldinga Beach agreed to let Oli and Winky stay with us during our trip. This Airbnb is light and spacious, equipped with everything you need for a mini-staycation. It is ideally located on the Fleurier Peninsula, surrounded by beautiful beaches, the stunning McLaren Vale wine region and an array of quality cafes and restaurants. Oli and Winky loved the yard and being able to walk to nearby Aldinga beach if we wanted to. Symonds Nature Reserve is a great dog park about five minutes from the property. The owners loved Ollie and Winx so much that this property is now pet friendly upon request! You can also book this property if you are planning a trip to the Fleurier Peninsula with your dog.

Please note – dogs are kept on a lead at all times, except between 10.00 and 20.00 in summer time

South Australia’s Florio Peninsula has some of the most dog-friendly beaches in Australia. From the pristine sandy shores of Aldinga Beach (where we stayed) to the rocky coastline of Cape Jervis, there are plenty of opportunities for you and your dog to take a refreshing swim or a long beach walk. I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of these beaches are off leash! Ollie and the Winx had so much fun running around the beaches with the beautiful views and crystal clear water.

During our stay we visited Normanville, Carrickalinga and Port Willunga beaches. All of these beaches were off-leash all the time. Our absolute favorite was Port Willunga Beach with its towering cliffs, picturesque caves and old piers that are remnants of the beach’s maritime past. We took some beautiful photos of the sunrise. But if you want to photograph the sunset on the horizon, visit at sunset!

What you need to know – Dogs are on a lead, and if your dog is well behaved, some stores will allow it. While you’re there, don’t forget to visit Beerenburg Farm, which is a 5-minute drive away. Dogs are not allowed inside.

Nestled in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia, Hahndorf is a charming little German town that’s also incredibly dog-friendly. With a number of dog-friendly cafes and restaurants, you can easily bring your four-legged friend along to enjoy a delicious meal. My partner loved visiting the Hahndorf Inn and eating German food every time we were there. There is plenty of room for dogs. Many high street shops are also dog friendly, meaning you can browse shops with well-behaved puppies.

Okay, this is more for us humans. We wanted to visit the Barossa Valley as it is famous for its world-renowned wineries and picturesque scenery. We’re pleasantly surprised that it’s also a dog-friendly place. Many wineries are dog-friendly, allowing you to roam the vineyards and taste wine with your four-legged friend. In addition to wineries, there are many cafes and restaurants where you can eat or have a snack with your dog. We visited on Easter Sunday and almost all places were very busy. We therefore recommend booking in advance if you are visiting during the festive period.

Time to visit – we went during the Easter holidays so it was very busy. But the vineyards are beautiful in autumn, so this is a good time to visit them, perhaps to avoid the crowds.

Best Hotels For Pets In 2024

McLaren Vale is in the heart of the Fleurier Peninsula and just beyond the wineries of the Barossa Valley! This area is the best to stay in as it offers easy access to all the beautiful beaches mentioned earlier such as Port Willunga Beach and the wineries are very happy with the Barossa Valley with its unique dog friendly open spaces.

Our favorite winery was Down The Rabbit Hole Wines. It is a beautiful vineyard with an even more beautiful outdoor area. The vintage double-decker bus in the courtyard not only serves as a fantastic photo backdrop, but also hosts wine tastings, making it a truly unique experience. All outdoor chairs, rugs, etc. exude a bohemian aesthetic while the music is still playing. You can take a plate and enjoy the good mood with your puppy.

The time of visit is a little unpredictable, because the color of the lake depends on many factors. It was April (autumn) and it wasn’t so sunny. Others were lucky in the spring.

Things to know – The lake won’t always be rosy, so check the latest reviews on Google or the latest photos on social media. Dogs must be kept on a leash. As this is a popular stop, it is unfortunately very dirty, which meant broken glass on the floor at the time we went. So be careful when walking your dog and don’t litter.
