We’ve based our ranking on a number of key factors that most pet owners who have moved to cities are looking for. To make the data as objective as possible, we decided to use only the key factors for each city for which data was available from publicly available sources.

We also look at other factors, such as walking and temperature, that don’t meet our criteria but may be useful for pet parents to consider when moving to a new city.

To determine the cities used in our ranking system, we selected the ten most populous cities in the United States and Canada.

Data on dog parks for listed US cities was collected through the Trust for Public Land’s 2022 Places of Worship and Facilities Report, which was available as of January 2023.

To conduct this study, we first identified the cities to be included based on the availability of data for the top 50 cities in all three size categories:

Capturing cities of different sizes is important because comparing a small city (eg, Waco, TX) to a larger city (eg, Chicago, IL) is like comparing apples to oranges. Each city-sized tier has different access to services, learning options, and cost (discussed below).

Dog Parks (0-100 points): We obtained information about dog parks from the Trust for Public Lands website. We used ParkServe’s search function to find information on the 150 cities we looked at and got their index by counting the number of dog parks per capita.

Dog Friendly Trails (0-100 points): For trail information, visit the AllTrails hiking and trail website. To get the data for this metric, we specifically searched for the city and set the filter to “dog-friendly trails.”

Dog Friendly Hotels (0-100 points): We use Google Travel to find available dog friendly hotels in each city and calculate a score based on the city’s population.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants (0-100 Points): BringFido.com’s directory helped us find dog-friendly restaurants in each city, and then we calculated them per person.

Dog Friendly Rentals (0-100 points): We pulled rental data from Realtor.com to find the most up-to-date information on dog-friendly homes and apartments in each city. We calculate data per capita (100,000 population).

Pet Sitters (0-100 points): We used the Sittercity directory to determine the number of dog sitters per capita in each city.

Cost of dog insurance (0-100 points): We collected data on the cost of dog insurance by searching the Figo website. We standardized the data by creating a pooled litter with a single insurance rate (male, two-year-old, 90% reimbursement, $500 deductible, and $5,000 copay).
