Ormond Beach, Fla. – Starting November 1, residents will be allowed to bring their dogs to a small section of Ormond Beach as part of a pilot program.

The Volusia County Council voted six to six on Tuesday, approving an 18-month pilot program that will allow dogs on 0.6 miles of beach. Several northeast Volusia residents spoke of wanting a dog beach without having to drive south to Ponce Inlet, where dogs are currently allowed.

“We have over 50 hotels that advertise themselves as dog-friendly, over 20 restaurants,” said local philanthropist Nannie Lohmann. “Forty-seven kilometers of beach and all we ask for is a small fraction.”

“We spend a lot of money traveling to other dog beaches in the country and I’d rather spend the money here in Volusia,” resident Leslie Lee said.

It comes with rules: people must clean up after their pets, dogs can’t go on the dunes or interfere with wildlife, they must be on a 6-foot leash and have proof of rabies vaccination.

Other residents who live in the area still have concerns. Some question whether there will be enough enforcement on dogs, dog bites and wildlife harassment.

“You can’t find enough people to stand up for them. $150 to $250 isn’t out there or if they’re from out of town, they’re not going to pay. They’re going to walk away,” said resident Laura. Rutledge.

“Just remember, you don’t want to punish good dog owners and good dogs for the transgressions of a few people,” Randy Fernandez said.

The county is still considering whether to permanently hire an animal control officer or employ Volusia deputies. These decisions will be made in the coming months. How did I get started, did I have a previous fitness background, how often did I go, do I have before and after photos, etc. So this post is going to be about how I started CrossFit and why I’m still doing it.

I had known the general idea of โ€‹โ€‹CrossFit for a long time. I had some college friends who did it religiously. However, I didn’t try it until earlier this year because I was lazy, really into yoga, and afraid of “looking stupid” in front of a bunch of people. Around last year’s holiday season, I could predict the next five moves in my fitness class and makeup workout and not break a sweat (that’s when you know it’s time for a change). It wasn’t challenging anymore and I got bored. I wanted to get stronger, and gain weight (100lb break!!), but not fat.

I don’t have a sweet story about how I lost XX pounds from CrossFit. In fact, quite the opposite. My story is about gaining about 15 pounds from crossfit and going from skinny fat to super skinny. (Note to all those skinny Asians who want to “gain weight”: it’s not by eating more crazy food). I have always been very small and most of the time I am seen as physically weak. During my senior year of college, I was diagnosed with an illness that was eating away at me at a ridiculous rate (not really a blessing). No matter how much I ate, I lost weight quickly. I get sick all the time too, and will be sick for a long time. I knew the wonders of daily exercise on health. My active father rarely gets sick, even when surrounded by sick people and healthy. So with the new year, I decided to try CrossFit in hopes of getting stronger and healthier. I took my first CrossFit class at 88 pounds at Fitness Gone Bad in Hawaii.

Not really. I started CrossFit 8 months after graduating college. I worked my ass off at CMU on very little sleep. I ate like crap: ramen, dino nuggets, free food and lots of ice cream and no exercise if you don’t count walking to class. However, I was a cheerleader in high school and often hung out with my dad and Daisy. In September 2010 I started doing yogalates (yoga + pilates) with more Ashtanga influences, and those fitness classes at your Globo gym. It was very hard for the first few months and then I got used to it.

After my first class at Fitness Gone Bad on vacation at home, I was sold on CrossFit and wanted to continue in the Bay Area. I poked around for a CrossFit gym in the area and decided to sign up for Jason Khalipa’s box: CrossFit Santa Clara / Mountain View, mainly because of my dual gym membership (Santa Clara close to work, Mountain View close to home) and Jason’s box. fame When I got into Jason’s box I couldn’t pull (I used a thick green band) and it was very hard to press 33#. However, I can do push-ups, lunges and high reps from toes to bar and knees to elbows. All my movements were really “slow and graceful”. I had a hard time with the Ollie lifts, especially exploding and moving quickly with my hips. To this day I still do, but not as bad. Jason was always yelling at me for being too attractive and overthinking. At first I was very nervous about the community factor and working with a bunch of very athletic people. It happened quickly when I realized after my first group class at CrossFit Santa Clara (10/01/11) that everyone was there to cheer and support each other. Well, the community is one of my favorite aspects of CrossFit!

I started going 2-3 times a week, while going to yoga 4-5 times a week and the occasional fitness class. At first I had my doubts. I was afraid of getting “big” or overweight muscles from lifting heavy. I have voiced my concerns and done research. We women apparently can’t get the “huge giant” (side note: check out this really good post on women and muscles). Anyway, back on track, after a while, CrossFit’s weekly attendance quickly increased 5x in early February. At that point I stopped going to those fitness classes but continued to do yoga. I was pretty active with yoga until May, when my attendance quickly dropped to zero. I haven’t done yoga in about 3 months. I’m going to try doing it again as I find it really helps with recovery and some gymnastic movements. Now I do CrossFit six times a week, Monday through Saturday. It’s a good thing CrossFit Mountain View is closed on Sundays, otherwise I wouldn’t be taking a day off!
