Dog Friendly Vacations Arizona – Summer is in full swing and we are all feeling it. Maybe I’m melting, but I know our dogs have it worse than me.
I think as humans we tend to over-recognize our pets and think that they can handle the heat even if we can’t, and maybe they can too, but as New Arizonans, the heat took a toll on our mother – the adventures of dolls are necessary.

That’s why we look for water rides, water excursions and water activities. We swam, fell and dived into as many waterfalls, pools and lakes as possible. Here are some of our favorites to help you and your pup stay calm, too.

8 miles and you will be crying with joy. There are two wells along the way and the furthest one, more than a kilometer from the first, has a beautiful waterfall. We spent about two hours at the first river and enjoyed swimming. We then took the trail to the waterfall and walked a little before heading back along the trail. Either way, it was the perfect pool for a man and his dog.
Another great place in northern Arizona is Lake Powell. Although it was quite crowded, we kayaked across the lake and found a small cove. We swam, kayaked, and explored the sandstone cliffs before camping at the lake.
Rory’s favorite thing on the lake is watching jet skis like he’s never seen before. Then we all laughed in the water as Rory sat next to us, dazed and very confused.
In Payson you will find Water Wheel Falls. A short 2-mile hike takes you to some majestic waterfalls and a small pool between the trail and the cliff. People bring floaties and coolers to hang out in the natural version of the pool, and dogs get in on the fun too! Rory climbs up and around the first drops to create an area for us. We swam in waist-deep water and could easily see the bottom of the river.

Sedona is the place to be in the summer if you’re coming from Phoenix. Before the crazy summer season started, we headed to Red Rock Crossing to spend an afternoon hiking along the river on the Cathedral Rock Trail. This is the perfect water ride for dogs getting their feet wet for the first time. The water is calm enough to wade through and deep enough not to overwhelm your fry. We were able to sit on a rock in the river and watch Rory gallop across the river without getting carried away. Be sure to take everything here, including dog poop, as Oak Creek flows into Sedona!
Just outside of Phoenix you will find the Harategi Recreation Area. This lake is huge and offers lots of opportunities to walk and swim with your dog. Dogs are NOT allowed on the beach itself, but just to the left of the beach is a path that leads to some dog-accessible watering holes and a lovely shaded bay for humans.
Many people bring SUP boards and kayaks to the lake because the beach area is a relaxation area where it’s easy to paddle and swim. Put your pup in a kayak and head left, past the wake area, to a small cove. If you decide to hit the trail, look for them on the side of the trail (carefully, of course!) and throw your pup’s floating toys for fun.

You’ve probably seen photos of beautiful Horseshoe Bend. This place has become popular in recent years thanks to Instagram, and believe me when I say it’s even more amazing in person. Horseshoe Bend attracts visitors with its short hike (just 20 minutes) and unique landscapes.
The best thing about Horseshoe Bend is that it is dog friendly. Dogs are welcome at Horseshoe Bend as long as their companions are kept on leashes longer than 6 feet at all times. Dogs must also be physically restrained by their human companions at all times.
There was a line of people waiting to get close to the edge and ask someone to take a photo or take several selfies. When we reached the edge, my three dogs walked among the rocky surface and looked down at the 1,000-foot drop, to the delight of some onlookers and the horror of others.
