Welcome To Fife

From campsites to lodges and beach houses, these are some of the favorite places for Great Danes in South East Queensland. Being in Brisbane during the COVID restrictions and border closures has given us the opportunity to travel a lot. And traveling locally means our Great Dane, Pickle, is always included in our travel plans. ABOUT ME

I’m Sasha, Great Dane mom and owner of Arctic Mist. A few years ago, I didn’t go many months without an international vacation. But times have changed and in recent years we have done a lot of local travel with Great Dane Pickle, mostly around South East Queensland. Unfortunately, Pickle passed away last year. But recently, a Great Dane puppy, Dzungu, appeared in our family. He follows in the footsteps of Pickle and explains with us on many trips.

So I thought I’d share some of my favorite places to stay with dogs in South East Queensland, including links to great places to stay and stay.

Discover Pet-friendly Activities While Stay In Pet-friendly Hotel

There are many dog friendly places in Australia and Hip Camp is a great place to start. You can enter the number of pets in the search and the results will only show the pet selection.

One of my favorite dog camps is Gordon Country in the Humburra Valley. Located above the Cunningham Gap between Oratula and Warwick, just two hours from Brisbane. We have camped there many times and since moving there last year (before Pickle) when it was an unequipped cattle ranch. It has changed a lot over the years and now has great space, views and accommodation.

Although the campsite is dog-friendly, they do not allow dogs in the cabins (only fenced yards and balconies). Therefore, we never live at home. If you are out of school/holiday, you can find a hidden place by the river. However, you need a 4WD to find a good campsite. Access to Gordon Country is via a dirt road and there is an area near the entrance and office that can be accessed without a 4WD.

Dogs can break a good leash. However, be careful because cows and donkeys are roaming rather than free. We like to go there to relax by the fire, but there are many 4WD and hiking trails. If you don’t mind the cold, you can swim in the river, and if you go in the winter, take all your warm clothes, it will be very cold!

There are various campsites on North Stradbroke Island. Dog laws seem to change all the time, so it’s a good idea to check the Stradbroke Island website for more information on dog-friendly areas and beaches. Stradbroke Island is a 45-minute drive from Cleveland. There is public transport on Stradbroke Island, but if you are bringing your dog I recommend taking the car on the ferry. Please note that dogs must be muzzled to exit the vehicle. Stradbroke Island also has dog friendly holiday homes, see below for details.

If you are looking for a vacation home/apartment,  Devices with dogs is a great site to find dog friendly accommodations. Each property lists pet-friendly features, such as whether the property is fenced, whether dogs are allowed inside, and whether it has items such as dog beds, bowls, and bags.

Make sure you read the rules because some places only allow certain dogs or outside breeds

Also make sure that the layout of the place is good, for example, if your dog is comfortable with stairs or lifts, if there is a fenced yard or a place where your dog can exercise alone. If you don’t know, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask.

We live in a nice 2 bedroom 1 bathroom (Perfect Alex Beach Pad) at Alexandra Headland, north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It is on the second floor and there are stairs leading up to the building. However, there is a large terrace with a beautiful view, so you don’t feel like home. Dogs are allowed inside, but not on the chairs or in the public pool area.

It is near Headland and Mooloolaba. There are many dog friendly restaurants on the Mooloolaba esplanade with outdoor seating, and 1 each.

Mooloolaba Beach is not dog friendly. However, Alexandra Headland Beach is dog friendly and there are several other dog friendly beaches within a short distance.
