The Best Things To Do In Shenandoah National Park In Virginia
Zach and I both went to college in south/central Virginia, so we’ve been familiar with the Shenandoah Mountains for a few years. We have hiked several trails in Shenandoah National Park with the Navy, but never hiked Duke. This time we visited Getaway House DC with Navy and spent the weekend visiting local breweries. Needless to say, we spent a lot of time with our dogs on weekend trips to the Shenandoah Mountains.
Shenandoah National Park is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, about 75 miles from Washington, DC. The park was 105 miles long from the north end of Royal to the south end near Waynesboro, Virginia. Skyline Drive is the main road that runs through the entire park. It leads to a variety of hiking trails, lodges, campsites, and many other amazing places to stop and take in the sights.

Shenandoah National Park and its surrounding towns are unique wildlife! We were very impressed with all the dog friendly hotels, wineries, breweries and restaurants in the area. Many of the hiking trails in Shenandoah National Park are also dog-friendly. There are some popular trails that dogs don’t like (for good reason!). See a list of trails where dogs are not allowed here. As a reminder, make sure to keep your pet under control at all times. We had a bad experience on a previous trip with three dogs that got lost on the side of a hill.
Hikes With Kids
Pets are allowed on Shenandoah National Park grounds. Don’t want to camp? There is an animal shelter! That said, most of the pet-friendly rooms at Big Meadows Lodge and Skyland Resort are very popular and book up quickly. We are big fans of Airbnb! Find pet owners in Lowry, Virginia. You will find beautiful cabins and farmhouses.
Last trip we decided to stay at Motel 6M. Jackson – Shenandoah. Not only are pets always free at Motel 6, but our location is close to beer-friendly restaurants and trails.
Of course, the best thing to do in Shenandoah National Park is hiking! Here are some of our favorite dog trails: Upper Trails, Hawksbill Mountain, and Mary’s Peak. This year I really want to hike Little Devil’s Steps, the Lewis Falls Trail, and the Riverside Trail.

The Shenandoah Valley is full of craft breweries. We always check the Corkhounds app and website before bringing Navy or Duke to the winery. I recommend contacting the winery to confirm their policy. Policies are subject to change!
We are proud Virginia wineries, so we look for wines on the Virginia Wine Trail that allow dogs. On our last trip, we limited our exploration to Wolf Gap Winery and Cave Ridge Vineyard. We decided to visit Coffee Ridge Vineyards because dogs are allowed in their rooms. When we got there, they joked that they liked the dog more than the kids’ friends. I can’t complain about that!
