Road Tripping Along The Oregon Coast
Less than two hours from Portland, Manzanita is one of the most popular destinations on the Oregon Coast. People are attracted by its proximity and beauty. But even less crowded than nearby Cannon Beach and Seaside!
Manzanita offers many outdoor activities. From hiking, surfing and snorkeling to seven miles of pet-friendly walks on the beach. Time your visit whale watching and hike to the top of Neakahnye Mountain to see a pod of gray whales. Don’t forget your binoculars!
Along the way you’ll see Oswald West State Park, named after the man who came up with the idea for the public beach. It is a popular place for surfers. And the bay is perfect for a picnic if you want to enjoy the sun and watch others surf the waves.
Or, if you want an experience on the water but think twice about the cool temperatures of the Pacific Ocean, check out SUP Manzanita. You can take paddleboard lessons or explore the calm waters of the Nehalem River Gorge. Be sure to pack a life jacket for your pup!
Road Trip: Driving The Oregon Coast

For great hiking options, hike two miles down the road to the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. Get a 5-day pass or pull out your Northwest Forest Pass and follow the pet-friendly trails to the Cape Perpetua Rock Shelter. Built in the 1930s, it stands 800 meters above the rushing water. The views from here are hypnotic!
Back at the Visitor Center, be sure to see the mesmerizing mirrors overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Devil’s Churn, Thor’s Well, and the Spouting Horn at Cook’s Chasm. For a lower hike, try the 804 trail, which connects seven kilometers of beach between Yachats and Waldport.
Yachats has some delicious restaurants to whet your appetite. Start your day with coffee and pastries at Green Salmon, one of the best little cafes on the entire Oregon Coast. All their teas and coffees are fair trade and organic, with some seriously creative brews like Kashmir Express, flavored with cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg.
This is Oregon, so of course there’s a local brewery. Drop a pint (or two) at Yachats Brewing, a sustainable brewery that celebrates the beauty and culture of the Yachats and welcomes pets on the outdoor patio.

Many camping options are available in the area, although none directly in town. Camping is available at Cape Perpetua for close access to the trails. If you want to stay in the middle of the action, consider The Fireside, located on Route 804.

This route runs along the north coast of Oregon, passing Cape Lookout and Cape Meares State Park, and passing through several small towns.
Hike or coast through Cape Kiwanda Natural Area and Bob Straub State Park to the summit of Nestuka Spit. Stop to view the tide pools or try to spot the boats bringing in the catch of the day. End strong with a walk across the sand at Cape Kiwanda. The beautiful countryside and coastal views are well worth it. Then bring your dog down for a real thrill!
