Glacier National Park is an amazing place where untouched wilderness is at the edge of the continent and the mountains reach the sky. But for dog walkers, going to our national parks is not easy.
Dog Friendly Lodging Glacier National Park
Glass is one of the few places in North America where all of our carnivores still exist. Black and black bears, wolves and wolves wander in the lush valleys and valleys. Protecting nature reserves and their populations means limiting where animals are allowed to go.

There are few ways in the glacier. One runs north and south along the western edge of the park. Highway 2 runs from East Glacier Park Village to West Glacier. And the most famous road, towards the sun, runs east and west from the center of the park for 50 kilometers.

On the Westbound Highway, pets are allowed in development zones. That means picnic areas, parking lots and Interstate 100. Basically, it’s going to be a long day in the car for your dog.
If you’re on the road to the sun (and you should be), plan to stop a few times along the way to let your kids out and stretch their legs.
West Glacier Vacation Rentals
There is only one way to visit Glacier National Park with dogs, and that’s when it’s not covered in snow. The MacDonald Creek Bike Trail is a 2.5 mile paved trail between West Glacier and Apgar Village.
Is Glacier National Park smaller than expected? Consider a trip across the border to Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park Dog Park!
We recommend taking the road to West Glacier, getting ice cream from Eddie when you get to Apgar, resting near Lake MacDonald, and then heading back to the mainland.
Remember that when hiking in Glacier National Park with your four-legged friends, you may encounter wildlife on the park’s roads and trails, so be careful. Bears go after dogs, which can be dangerous for you and your child.

After you’ve completed the Go-West Road and MacDonald Creek Bike Trail, there’s not much left to do in Glacier National Park for your canine friends.
You can find a pet sitter at your furry friends or daycare to accompany your dog on walks in the park. Or you can explore the surrounding areas to have fun together!
Glacier National Park may not be the best place for dogs, but the surrounding area is! From big forests to friendly small towns, western Montana has a lot to offer travelers and pets alike.
Across the border from America’s famous Glacier National Park is Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park, which is just as dog friendly!

Waterton is known for its crystal clear lakes, waterfalls and mountains. But our favorite part is how much you and your dog can do together!
For a great adventure, take your child south to one of these forests. The Flathead, Kootenai, Lewis and Clark National Forests are all within easy driving distance. And all trails in the National Forest are pet friendly!
In fact, dogs are allowed to roam freely in many areas of the National Forest. But because of the local animals, it’s not a good idea if they don’t have a very reliable memory.
Hungry Horse Reservoir in the Flathead National Forest is beautiful and the hiking trails feel like you have them all to yourself.
Glacier Park Lodge
Flathead Lake is amazing. We spent a week visiting and give it five stars for dog-friendly travel near Glacier National Park. A must see if you are visiting western Montana. You’ll find hiking trails, camping, outdoor parties, boating, swimming and more.
This lake is about an hour from the west entrance to Glacier National Park. It is the largest salt lake west of the Mississippi River – about 30 miles long and 16 miles wide. So your travel time may vary slightly depending on which part of the lake you travel to.
Most of the land around Flathead Lake is part of the Flathead Indian Reservation, established in 1855 by the Hellgate treaty. The area is home to three tribes: the Bitterroot Salish, the Mount Pend d’Oreille, and the Kootenai.
Along with the national park, six Montana state parks line the shores of Flathead Lake. Together, these features make up Flathead Lake State Park. Five areas of the state park are pet-friendly and dogs are kept on leashes:
U.s. National Park Lodges & Hotels
Yellow Bay only offers tent sites (first come, first served), but other dog resorts offer tents and RVs. Some hiking, biking, or boat camping! Cool Whip, Hercules, and I camped in our truck at Wayfarers, Big Arm, and West Shore. Each offers a different experience, so playing in the park around the lake is really fun.
Two of my favorite things about these parks are the petting zoos and the free shuttles. They make it easy to clean up after your dog and enjoy safe and pet-friendly trips!
Wayfarers is a beautiful 67-acre forest located in Bigfork, Montana. We have a great North Shore (Minnesota) vibe with pine trees that hang on the beach. And it’s a perfect place to enjoy the sunset after a full day of travel.
If you prefer urban trails without encountering wildlife, check out the Swan River Trail in Bigfork. This is an easy 3 mile hike with great views of the Swan River.
Top Pet-friendly Rentals In Glacier National Park
Also, if you’re into art, theater, live music, film festivals, craft festivals, farmers markets, and even dog sledding in the winter, Big Fork is great! If you’re not camping, Bigfork also has several friendly lodges.
This was my favorite stop, and probably the dogs too – the ranger park gave my dog food when we arrived! If you want a place to relax in nature, West Coast is where you want to go. The campsite is in a large pine forest, which gives you a lot of space to relax.
But don’t waste all your time! There are several trails that go through the park. For the best view, take the Osprey Overlook trail to the top of the mountain. Then take the lake trail to Linderman Lookout. The views through the trees to Flathead Lake are amazing!
At the beach, you can enjoy snacks on the picnic tables or jump off the many beautiful pebbles that are part of the beach.
Two Dog Flats Grill At Rising Sun Motor Inn, Glacier National Park
Cool Whip doesn’t want to get your fingers wet, but your dog might! As long as there are no signs, dogs are allowed on the beach and in the water.
If you and your teen want to camp near the water, Big Arm has the park for you! Be sure to bring camping blocks if you’re camping in a van or RV – because they’re so close to the beach, many of the campsites have rough terrain. It’s worth the effort though! There is nothing like cooking dinner and enjoying a fire at the lake.
Kalispell, Montana is one of Outdoors magazine’s growing cities for 2021. And it’s only 30 minutes from Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, recreational facilities, and many state and national forests. Just outside of town is Lone Pine State Park with many hiking trails (no camping).
Historically, the city has been focused on agriculture and commercial activities. However, its appeal to outdoor travelers and tourism is increasing. If you want to stay in the city, it is a great opportunity to set up camp because you will find many options for pet owners who have dogs, shelters, food, laundry, animals, and pets.
West Glacier Rv Park
At the southern end of Flathead Lake is the town of Polson. This cute little neighborhood has a lot to offer: cute coffee shops, museums, antique shops, and more.
Polson is also home to the Flathead Cherry Festival. During the festival, Main Street in downtown Polson is closed to the public for two days to celebrate the cherry blossoms with vendors, artists and great food. Can’t go to the party? There are many cherry orchards growing in the area, so you will see many road signs announcing that cherries are for sale when they are in season.
Do you want your dog to play on a leash? Visit the Travis Dolphin Dog Park. There is a playground upstairs, with a dock and access to the water if your child likes to swim.
