Dog Friendly Beaches Eastern Suburbs – Sydney’s eastern suburbs are known for their beaches, but unfortunately, most beaches are off limits to dogs. For starters, all beaches in the Waverley and Randwick districts are off-leash, even on-leash.
However, Woollahra Council has a few harbor beaches that are dog friendly and plans to increase their numbers, as well as another beach on the very edge of the Botany Bay area. Find out more about dog-friendly beaches in Sydney’s eastern suburbs…
Dog Friendly Beaches Eastern Suburbs
One of the most famous beaches in Sydney and across Australia is Bondi Beach, which is crowded with locals and visitors on sunny days.

Unfortunately, the sand and water at Bondi Beach is strictly off limits for dogs. However, dogs can accompany you for walks behind Bondi Beach and in the park, as long as they are on a lead.
Another popular beach in the Eastern Suburbs is Coogee Beach, south of Bondi. However, unlike Bondi, dogs are not allowed on the sand or in the water at Coogee Beach.
It’s still possible to walk the park with your dog on a leash and boardwalk behind Kuji Beach. There are always some dogs when I visit!
I often visit Kuji Beach with my dog and follow the trails north and south of the beach. Leashed dogs can accompany you on the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk and the South Coogee Beach Walk.
Dog Off-leash Areas
Woollahra Council is currently proposing to increase the number of off-leash areas in the borough including off-leash beaches – an exciting development for dog owners!
If the proposal goes ahead, both Rose Bay Park and Kutty Beach will be changed from on-leash dog beaches to off-leash dog beaches. Additionally, Watson’s Bay will feature two new off-leash dog beaches: Gibson Beach and Robertson Beach.
There are no updates after the public exhibition period ends, not to mention when a decision will be made. It doesn’t look like anything will happen in 2023, but hopefully a decision will be made in 2024.
The most popular dog beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is Rose Bay Dog Beach, also known as Rose Bay Beach.
Eastern Suburbs Mums Sydney
This off-leash dog beach is located between Percival Park and Dumaresque Reserve in the harbor suburb of Rose Bay. On Google Maps, search for “Rose Bay Beach”.
Dogs are allowed off leash on the beach all day, no time limit. However, please note that dogs can only be off-leash in the neighboring Dumaresque Reserve before 8:30am. I or after 4:30 pm I For more information, see the Council’s website.
This dog beach is a fairly calm harbor, making it suitable for dogs of all sizes and swimming abilities. At low tide, the water is shallow for some distance, but eventually deepens for more reliable dogs. This is a great place to SUP with your pup.
I recommend accessing the beach from the Caledonian Road end as sometimes the sand in front of the Dumaresque Reserve is covered with water. Parking nearby can be difficult. If you can’t find a street park, there is parking nearby on Dover Road.
7 Awesome Dog Beaches In Eastern Suburbs Sydney
Dogs are also allowed on the beach adjacent to Rose Bay Park, west of Rose Bay. This small beach lies between the harbors of Rose Bay and Point Piper; Find Bellamy Beach on Google Maps.
Currently, dogs are officially required to be on a leash at this beach, although not all owners and their dogs follow this rule. It is proposed to designate Rose Bay Park and the nearby beach as an off-leash dog exercise area (see above). If in doubt check the latest signal.
This beach is not as wide as Rose Bay Dog Beach and the water from the harbor sometimes goes over the boardwalk. However, its waters are quite calm and it would be nice to have another off-leash option soon.
Kuti Beach is one of the most beautiful harbor beaches in the Eastern Suburbs. Hidden away in Vaucluse, you won’t find this beach if you don’t already know it exists. It’s only a small beach, so it can get crowded on hot summer days.

The beach is accessed by a series of steep, narrow wooden steps at the end of Wharf Road, not the easiest access for dogs. Smaller, less agile dogs may need to be eliminated.
The easiest parking is again on Hopetoun Avenue. Alternatively, it is a 10-minute walk from Watsons Bay and the ferry docks.
Currently, this beach only allows dogs on leash. However, it is also proposed to change the beach to allow confined dogs; Check the website or signs. Many dog owners already leave their dogs on leashes, but I’ve seen council wardens running around to enforce the rules before.
The newest dog haven in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is tiny Lady Martin Beach in the exclusive suburb of Point Piper.

This small stretch of sand traps the breakwater at the top of Point Piper. Combined with the inconvenience of nearby parking, not many visitors come.
Also note that dogs must be kept on a leash at this beach. There are currently no plans to change this.
Finally, I would like to share with you a beach that is not located in the eastern suburbs, but on the border and if you live in the southern half of the region.
Known as Port Botany Foreshore or simply “Foreshore Beach” on Google Maps, this dog-friendly beach is located on the northern shore of Botany Bay between the container port and the airport runway.
Camping With Your Dogs
It’s easy to miss because it’s not listed as a dog-friendly beach on any council website; Instead, it is run by the Port Authority.
Dogs are only allowed on leashes on this beach, with lots of signs to remind dog owners, although I think dogs are often off leash here. Although it is not the prettiest place, it is a long stretch of sand (about 500 meters long) and very quiet, at least when I visited during the week. As an added bonus, you can even watch planes land and take off up close!
The easiest place to park is at the eastern Foreshore Road boat ramp, where there is a large parking lot. There is a traffic light to enter the parking lot in both directions.
Alternatively, there is also a small car park next to Mill Stream Lookout at the west end, although it is only accessible to cars traveling west on the foreshore road.

Behind the beach is a common path that connects the two parking lots. With it you can complete a circuit: walk along the beach in one direction and then return on a paved path. There is also a nearby footbridge connecting the area to the large botanical Sir Joseph Bank Park.
