Field Trip: As travelers looking to give back to the local communities we visit, we are interested in the “Shelter Dog Field Trip” at the Kaua’a Humane Society. ” program that recently adopted the dogs from Kaua. They were so happy when they heard about it through a friend. We are always excited to adopt dogs, especially after doing a dog rescue mission in the US and adopting our little Asher from Texas (both at another time).
This prayer date is perfectly integrated into our schedule, a “rest day” where we go at our own pace with no set agenda and spend the day with our dog. We have such a unique experience that we want to share our learnings, experiences and advice. We hope you’ll also do a dog day on your travels (or if there’s a program where you live) and maybe even adopt your rescue dog!
According to the Kauai Humane Society, Kauai has more dogs than people. Many of them were once bred to hunt wild boar. When the sheep cannot learn or are too old, they are left on the street. With such a mild climate in Hawaii, these dogs can starve on the streets for a while before being picked up and taken to shelters. This problem brings shelters to critical capacity, where there are not enough spaces to properly care for stray dogs.

This non-profit animal shelter was established in 1952 and is the only outdoor animal shelter on Kauai. They take dogs, cats, pets of all kinds and companions to no-kill shelters, which is important because many shelters are forced to euthanize select animals when they die. The Kauai Humane Society does a wonderful job of engaging the community through a variety of programs, even for non-adopted dogs, such as boarding days and dog parks. The shelter helps about 3,000 animals a year!

Cost: $40 donation to support humane society activities. There are different donation levels (from $40 to $300) that can include food for the dog or even sponsoring a dog to be adopted on the Hawaiian mainland.

Kauai Humane Society’s Borrow A Dog In Hawaii
We are traveling to Kauai after the Covid restrictions are lifted (September 2022) so there are some precautions. For one, the staff picked the dog for us, and the pre-Covid farm managers could go to the turkey area and pick the dog that matched them. It was a bit sad but it was an emotional day because we cried when we saw so many homeless dogs and we wanted to give them all a home. They allow viewing for those who are very serious about hosting the island.
Once the online reservation and donations were completed, the process was seamless as we entered the building. The staff asked us about our plans for the day (travel, of course) and returned with our new friend Tigger.
The tiger is a nice mix of orange/dark brown collar, which looks like a tiger on the back. When our eyes met, we knew we had a friend! Tigger was very outgoing from the start. We can tell he’s done this many times before and is excited to meet new people who will take him on new adventures. We later found out that Tigger was one of the dogs that had been at the shelter the longest (over 100 days when we met him).
We picked Tigger up at 11am and after the briefings and introductions it was time for lunch. Seafood cravings beckon, so we check out a local hidden gem, Konohiki Seafood, and have the most amazing pork belly, fresh plate, and fresh Chirashi. Tigger waited patiently with Jeff outside the restaurant, and within the first 15 minutes with the dog we had people asking about Tigger and his “pick me up” device. We quickly shared about the Kauai Humane Society and spoiler alert: at the end of the day we found a local couple (who we met at the restaurant) looking for a dog waiting at the shelter.

After lunch, the mountain of the Sleeping Giant (Nou Nou) was chosen as the hike of the day. We wanted something for dogs, so we chose this suggestion. The Sleeping Giant East Trail is 5.5km, 293m elevation gain, classified as difficult and takes 2.5 hours. We only recommend this route if the weather is good and it hasn’t rained recently as the route is different.
Tigger took a while to adjust to walking with us; will also be withdrawn. As former dog parents and carers, we have experience in dog behavior and training. However, these skills are not necessary for a field trip if you have basic knowledge of dog handling and can adapt to a dog and read its body language.
Eventually Tigger got into a rhythm, but it was so humid and hot that this Hawaiian dog couldn’t walk more than 3 km! We come back even when we get to the top because the important thing is that Tigger is safe and comfortable with us. Although Tigger was drinking less water and eating less, the staff informed us that most dogs do not use the bathroom on field trips. Tigger got them and there was no need to follow him.
During the trip, Tigger was a magnet. People come up to us and ask us about it. It was an organic way to spread human community on Kauai. We didn’t see any other dogs on the trail, which helped because it’s important that shelter dogs don’t run into other dogs.

The search site was 30 minutes from the shelter, but we started an hour before the car stopped. Rush hour traffic in Lihue is notoriously inaccurate on Google Maps. Our advice to avoid the late fee is to return early. After Kaua’s return to the humane society, we filled out a short form about Tigger’s likes, dislikes and behaviors to help staff gather up-to-date information for potential adopters.
It was hard to say goodbye to Tigger, but we knew he would be accepted because he was a good boy. We recently checked the Humane Society website again and found that it was accepted months after we saw it. Our hearts are so full after this experience that we would do it again in a heartbeat.
