After spending most of 2010 on the road with a 40-pound dog, my husband and I have come to love and appreciate outdoor dining, dog parks, and puppy sitting. So when we got home, we were excited to learn that Hot Springs was opening its first off-leash dog park. Since then, the city has continued to grow, rolling out the welcome mat to visitors of all kinds, including four-legged ones. Below are some great pet-friendly activities for you and your partner, along with recommendations for places to stay and eat. When booking your stay, let the front desk know you’re bringing your dog and ask about their pet policy so you’re not surprised by any fees or rules.
Hike to a waterfall, mountain view, or brewery! The Ouachita Mountains surrounding Hot Springs are home to hundreds of miles of trails that lead to some amazing places. In addition to being a national park, Hot Springs borders the Ouachita National Forest and has several state parks nearby. Hot Springs National Park allows dogs on all 26 miles of trails and trails leading in and out of downtown. I like to start at the Fountain Trailhead and head to Gulfa Gorge Campground on the North Mountain. There you can relax and cool off with a swim in the stream with your dog. After your hike, enjoy lunch or a cold beer at one of the dog-friendly restaurants downtown. A round trip is approximately three miles, depending on the route. Pennsylvania Dog-friendly Travel Guide
Choose one of the dog-friendly hotels for easy access to the park and its trails. Happy Hollow is a retro-style hotel that opened under new ownership in 2015 after extensive renovations. It’s directly across the street from the Fountain Trailhead, which connects to trails that wind their way across the mountain. Before you leave, fill up your water bottle at the Happy Hollow Cold Spring next to the hotel.
The city center has a variety of restaurants with dog-friendly outdoor patios and beer gardens. Choose from Grateful Head’s Pizza Oven and Beer Garden, Rolando’s Restaurant or Steinhaus Keller. And be sure to visit the Superior Bathhouse Brewery. It is the first brewery to be headquartered in a US national park. And the first brewery in the world to use thermal spring water as its main ingredient. In addition to delicious draft beer, Superior serves home-brewed root beer and delicious farm-to-table meals made with local ingredients. Best of all, dogs are allowed! There is also an outdoor dining area on the grass lawn.
Let your dog play off-leash at Hot Springs Bark Park. Open year-round from dawn to dusk, the park has separate sections for big and small dogs and more.
