Dog Friendly Holidays Forest Of Dean

In November 2019, we took our 2-year-old chocolate labrador, Vinny, on his first vacation. We chose Forest Vacations as we had been to Sherwood Pines before so we knew they had dogs – but since this was Winnie’s first time out in an unfamiliar place, we chose something closer to home: the Forest. department head.

Our Top Dog-friendly Cottages For 2024

A little research and we found many walks in the forest, all about 15 minutes from the place (but you can go out of the rooms and be in the forest immediately, so any way is good). here too!)

Our previous wilderness vacations were for honeymoons so we went to the top of the Golden Oak cabin, but this time we wanted something cool but didn’t need a top cabin so we chose Silver Birch. This cabin still has a hot tub but doesn’t have a wood stove and doesn’t have extra towels for using the hot tub – but the cabin sleeps 4 so we used extra towels from the bedroom.

We managed to book a holiday when there was a voucher code in the January sale so Vinny didn’t charge anything (dogs are normally £15 per dog per night). When searching for cabins on the website, make sure they say “pet friendly” as the results will show cabins that are not pet friendly. We chose holidays during the week (Monday-Friday).

At the end of our holiday we decided to go with Winnie to the Cotswold Wildlife Park to see the wild animals as we were closer than when we left home.

We arrived at 4pm to check into a warm and cozy log cabin (they offer early check in for an additional fee, but we didn’t choose that as it only meant 2 extra hours in the cabin).

On arrival we took Vinny into the cabin before the car was delivered – he was so happy with the new surroundings and the smell that he led our exploration!

The deck is fenced and divided into 2 areas – the upper deck has outdoor tables and chairs, a disposable grill patio, and the enclosed lower deck where the hot tub is located. The hot tub has another access gate so the staff can access the hot tub for daily inspections, but make sure it’s properly secured before you bring the dog in, as ours wasn’t fully closed until I checked (paranoid dog mom at work!)

Kindly, the team at Sango Holidays have left Winnie a big bonnie and some perishable bags! (She liked the cakes more than the bags, but we were grateful!) We got Winnie a bed, toys, and toys to help her wake up.

Tip: Trash bags can be placed in the brown bin outside the cabin or taken to one of the many dog bins on site for proper disposal – we took it for a day or two and then took it away. They were thrown away because we were going somewhere else.

Vinny didn’t want us in the hot tub the first night, but on the second night a snake play mixed with frozen yogurt and canned sardines quickly put him on.

We asked for a bath mat when we came to bathe Vinny as the tub and shower are slippery so when we bathe at home we always put him in the bath so that he is comfortable.

There are so many new sounds at night (mainly owls and deer) that Winnie didn’t sleep well and I woke up tired. The bed was a twin instead of our usual king, which meant that Winnie was uncomfortable as she always slept with us in our big bed.

Vinny also had trouble adjusting to the polished floor and had a bit of a panic getting on/off the sofa and bed because it was slippery.

However, we woke up to a cool day and decided to take our first day of hiking.

Forest Holidays are self catering, but there is a restaurant (located in the Forest of Dean reception) where they serve breakfast/lunch/dinner and you can have a hot meal delivered to your Cabin!

We went to Beechenhurst Lodge to check out the sculpture trail – the whole trail is about 4.5 miles (if you can follow the trail), we walked 6 miles in 3 hours where we had to repeat it twice. Go off-road through the deep mud and follow Winnie along the way!

The fall colors were beautiful! Most of the hiking trails have stone paths and are therefore accessible, but some depend on the time of year
