I was born in Kent and grew up near the coast so I know it well. Although many small towns are rough around the edges, much of the area has improved. There are now small, independent shops, bakeries and cafes to enjoy that weren’t there when I lived there.

Kent is at its best when the sun shines. The best way to enjoy the Gardens of England is by taking a coastal walk or country lane. There are plenty of long walks to explore as well as short and sweet ones that tire the legs easily. If you want to cover the most ground, take the Viking Coastal Route. It is 32 miles (51.4 km) and connects Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs.
This self-guided route combines sightseeing with local attractions. Explore Margate at your own pace; Skip the parts that don’t interest you and spend more time on the ones you love. It’s a great way to pack a lot into one day, and your dog will love all the sights and smells.
If you want to combine sea walks and beach trips with some sightseeing, a visit to Botany Bay is a must. You will be able to see the beautiful chalk stacks that the area is famous for. It is also a great place for fossil hunting and rock pool exploration.

There are many coastal walks to choose from in this area. My favorite is the nature preserve loop called the Contra Trail. It takes you a 12.2 mile (19.6 km) walk from Royal Harbor to Viking Ship and Pegwell Bay Nature Reserve.
This beautiful nature reserve of 615 hectares is home to rare flora and fauna. This is one of the few reserves where dogs are welcome to run and bark, just be aware of the restricted areas.
The walk takes you to Dumpton Gap, a great beach for dog walkers, along the coast to Ramsgate and back. It covers 4.88 miles and takes about 2 hours. It’s one of my favorites because it’s so dog friendly.
If you’re visiting Thanet, it’s quite the trip, but I encourage you to consider it if you have the time. At one point it was considered a desert, and although it is no longer, the landscape is still extraordinary. Plus, they have a dog-friendly Dungeness train!
A Dog Friendly Edinburgh Break
South East Kent has over 50 beaches and 98% of them are dog friendly. There are restrictions in the summer months, but usually only for a few hours, which means there are plenty of beaches to explore with your partner at this time of year. I’ve put together a guide to dog-friendly beaches in Kent, along with the dates the beaches are open to dogs. Here are some of my favorite beaches to visit:
This is the best dog-friendly beach if you’re visiting the city. Stroll through Margate’s old town before heading to the wide sandy beach to play on even at low tide.
It’s not a very beautiful beach, but the location is great. You can walk along West Cliff as well as the beach and harbour. You’ll find a dog-friendly cafe and a shop called Archive, which sells pet accessories, coffee and cakes.
It’s a popular place and it’s obvious why. Dogs have plenty of freedom to play in this secluded bay surrounded by beautiful white cliffs. Nearby parking, a dog-friendly cafe and a short walk in either direction will bring you to Ramsgate or Broadstairs.
A Dog-friendly Travel Guide To Margate, Kent — A Considered Life
The beach is amazing and a popular place for surfing. So it’s no surprise that you have to hurry if you want to get a parking space. A little further on is Kingsgate Bay with its beautiful sea arch. Parking is difficult here so drive and walk to Joss Bay.
This is a good option when you want to avoid the sand dog. It has everything you want from a traditional seaside village, including beach huts, fishing boats and weatherboard cottages. Dogs are also welcome all year round.
Sightseeing with a dog is often difficult. Museums and galleries have an unwavering ‘no dog’ policy. So it takes some digging to find things indoors with your partner. When I visit Kent I usually stick to the beaches and parks. The Shell Cave and Crab Museum are worth a visit. If you like historical stories and costume walks, there is plenty to do outside!
It is truly a special attraction not to be missed. The cave is an “exquisite underground passage” with a mysterious history. It was discovered in 1835 and is made of 4.6 million seashells. Dogs are only allowed inside the cafe, not in the cafe, but it’s worth queuing to see the shell-covered mosaics.
Dog-friendly Places To Eat And Drink
Europe’s only museum dedicated to tithes is full of character. Being in the middle of Margate’s Old Town and being such a small museum, it’s worth a miss. Your dog is welcome to join you as you learn about Margate’s famous giant crab.
Dogs are allowed on the grounds but not inside the castle, making it an ideal free activity on a sunny day. Buy a ticket and take turns visiting the castle or enjoying the gardens with your partner.
After a long walk on the beach or a dip in the sea, there is nothing better than finding a cafe for lunch and ice cream for desert. The Kent coast has excellent seafood, from traditional chips to modern menus. Apart from the odd meal, I usually stick to self-catering when visiting Kent. If you want to have fun with your significant other, here are some places that are at the top of my list to visit.
This bustling little cafe is a must-see. The menu is short but tasty with an excellent coffee and wine selection. Our colleague was warmly welcomed as were we. Cafe Turner is a short walk from the Contemporary to the Hill, so it’s best to visit before or after a stroll through Margate’s Old Town.
Dog-friendly Caravan Holidays Kent
This cafe is located quite far from the main part of the city. It had a slight edge in atmosphere, but the coffee was excellent and dogs were welcome. If you like record shopping, it’s worth the walk. There is more space than castles, so better for larger groups.
It is a very popular restaurant among locals and tourists. On a sunny day you can sit outside and enjoy the friendly and relaxed atmosphere of Margate Old Town. The menu has simple yet delicious vegetarian friendly options covering everything from breakfast to dinner.
This chippy has the most extensive vegetarian friendly menu I have ever seen. The portions are huge so I would consider sharing, especially as it is more expensive than a traditional chip shop. Although it is delicious, it is a good option for your sparkling tea night. If you want a small portion, go to Peter’s Fish Factory by the sea.
This glass house is small but beautiful. There is not much space inside and it is not always open as a tea room. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a seat and enjoy a drink in the sun. Small dogs are welcome inside or outside the site. The beautiful glass house is worth a visit on its own.

This is a must-see every time we visit Kent. They are dog friendly, the ice cream is amazing (they have vegan options!) and the interior is beautiful. It’s along the main promenade if you want to sit outside and people watch.
This cafe welcomes you and your partner with a delicious menu to enjoy after a long beach walk. They also offer free creative space for locals who want to share their art. If you fancy eating here, it’s worth booking as Whitstable gets busy quickly.
