Best Dog Friendly Restaurants Edinburgh – I am often asked, “Is Edinburgh dog friendly?” Edinburgh is a dog friendly city. But we rarely get to spend time exploring Scotland’s capital with the boys traveling as often as we do. It’s been a while since we decided to work from home on the weekend, so when Hotel Indigo invited us to review their boutique hotel in York Place, we jumped at the chance.

The hotel is situated in a Georgian townhouse in the heart of Newtown. Shops, restaurants, bars, attractions and parks are right on your doorstep. It is within walking distance of Edinburgh Central Station. The airport tram service also stops outside, making the hotel a good base for exploring Edinburgh.

After leaving the hotel, we swapped the Georgian architecture for the high grounds of the Old Town, the medieval heart of the city.

Our walk through the old town took us to Blair Street, just off Cowgate. One of Edinburgh’s favorite dog friendly restaurants is on Blair Street, so it seemed like the perfect time to stop for dinner.

After lunch we walked along the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace. The Palace is the official residence of the Scottish royal family and was once the home of Mary Queen of Scots.

From Holyrood our Old Town walk took us to New Calton Cemetery. There is a watchtower built in a strange cemetery in Georgia to keep body shavers safe. Many tombs are decorated with skulls and cross bones.

Now it was time to rest. The boy was curled up in the dog bed while Mr. G and I sat on the comfortable king size bed watching TV.

We woke up the next morning, went and got ready for tomorrow. The sun was shining and we were looking forward to spending the whole day walking around the city with the boy. But first we needed breakfast.

I’m not sure how good breakfast would be in a hotel without a restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. There was a variety of breakfast offerings, including a variety of culinary options and a variety of continental breakfast items.

Our first stop was Saint James Quarter, right on the doorstep of our hotel. The Gallery will open a lot in the summer of 2021, replacing the eyesore from the 1960s. The new Gallery brought some high end shops and restaurants to the east end of Edinburgh.

The Gallery is dog friendly, with dog watering stations around the property and strollers available for rent in case your four-legged friend doesn’t have enough energy to shop. There are also many dog friendly shops and restaurants, including the very famous English John Lewis where we go.

The National Portrait Gallery of Scotland is just a few doors from Hotel Indigo. It was one of my favorite places to visit in Edinburgh as a student, but it’s been a few years since I visited. Waiting on the doorstep gave me the perfect opportunity to visit a gallery that was long overdue.

The gallery is not dog friendly, but there is a leafy square next to it, so we took turns visiting it while the other sat with the boy, basking in the early autumn sun.

The west garden has a children’s playground, a beautiful fountain and a flowery clock, bringing back fond childhood memories. We bid our time just as little Buddy was about to appear. And the familiar call of the cuckoo, the cuckoo, brought me back to those carefree youth days.
