In this post, I wanted to look at the most dog-friendly places in the West, focusing on California and Oregon, two states where you can easily travel with pets (I know because I travel here all the time)! In these states, I wanted to find places that push the boundaries of dog-friendliness: that is, dog-friendly parks or dog-friendly beaches, pet-friendly hotels, and relaxing city walks that make it easy for pets. Going on an adventure together. And I found some great places like Bend, Oregon and Carmel, California…. and more. Although the only dog-friendly beach in Oregon is Cannon Beach, keep in mind: almost EVERY beach in Oregon is dog-friendly and has fewer rules and restrictions than California beaches! Translation: The Oregon Coast is perfect for dog trips. View of Gold Beach, Oregon
I love Cannon Beach for so many reasons: charming little town, dozens of great restaurants, cafes (Sleeping Monk!!), plenty of top-notch pet-friendly hotels, and of course: a 100% pet-friendly beach . friendly. There is no topic!! Oregon is more relaxed about this than California. The view of Haystack Rock will make you faint, especially at sunset. Stroll down Ocean Boulevard with your backpack, grab a bowl of soup from one of the many outdoor patios, and be sure to stop by the adorable pet store around the corner: Puppy Love by the Sea.
*** My pick for the best pet-friendly hotels in Cannon Beach: This is a tie between Ocean Beach and Surfsand Resort. Both are luxury beachfront hotels and pet-friendly. Ocean Lodge’s rooms are spacious and take full advantage of the view ~ but Surfsand is close to Haystack Rock, the rooms are even better, the Wayfarer restaurant is my favorite in town (and has room service)…
Dog Friendly Beaches In California
Bend is my current residence in America, and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever lived anywhere this pet-friendly. The staggering number of dog parks in Bend alone puts California’s dog parks to shame, and nearly every restaurant in town with a patio is dog-friendly; these include: McMenamin’s St. Francis School (a bar, brewery, cinema, concert venue). , cigar bar and hotel all in a former Catholic school), Bare Wines, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrels… and the list goes on.
Bend has more dog-friendly parks, hotels, and restaurants than any other city on this list! Dylan painted here along the famous Deschutes River Trail in downtown Bend.
*** My pick for the best pet-friendly hotel in Bend: Tetherow Golf Resort. At Tetherow, you have a great place to stay at a resort with STUNNING mountain views ~ and you’re just a 5-minute drive from downtown Bend’s famous Old Mill District. This is the best pet friendly place in town. Alternatively, head to Sunriver Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend: one of the best family vacation destinations in the United States.
Big Carmel Beach is my dog’s favorite outdoor beach in the world: To the right is legendary Pebble Beach, and if you walk left from the moon-shaped beach, you’ll be lined with cypress trees along with dollar houses of various shapes. … from chic country house styles to solid and modern styles. There’s a reason Clint Eastwood lives here: There’s something special about Carmel.

I grew up in Orange County, and this past weekend I met some friends from Huntington Beach at the new outdoor market in Pacific City. Dylan was with me on the way home for Christmas, which meant I had to take him to the mall… The shopkeeper invited us in, had coffee with us, and we all had lunch at Simmzy’s overlooking the valley. & Ocean. I would go back in a heartbeat! There’s one more reason to visit Huntington with your dog: It’s the ONLY beach in Orange County where dogs are allowed off-leash.

San Diego has not one but two dog-friendly beaches in the same area: Del Mar and Coronado. Dylan and I tried the dog beach in Del Mar, south of Encinitas, last year. While it’s not as big as Carmel Beach, it’s still gorgeous. Happy dogs were in and out of the water, people were calm and friendly, and parking was easy right at the entrance to the beach. Coronado Dog Beach has pristine white sand and is just a stone’s throw from the historic Hotel Del Coronado.
Coronado Dog Beach is one of the best places in Southern California to play in the sand with your pup.
*** My Best Hotel Friendly Tips in San Diego: San Diego is big so it depends on where you want to be. In the northern region, try the luxurious L’Auberge Del Mar, which accommodates two dogs of any size. If you’re in the Gaslamp city centre, try the modern Hotel Indigo with its rooftop bar. And if you want to be close to Coronado’s legendary dog beach, check out Hotel del Coronado, where three of its restaurants are dog-friendly! (Dogs under 40 pounds only in Del….)

Believe me: I visited every place on this list last year, so my recommendations are up-to-date for 2020 and beyond!
